Driveline angle

Does this angle look ok or do the shims the PO put in the rear axle look too steep? I am having vibration from rear and going to replace the u joints, but I am thinking that the angle isn't too good on the joints.

I am aware my rear pinion seal is leaking a bit too. Haha.

Yeah. The PO also installed the lift. No body. Looks like about 3 or 4" using shackles in front and possibly slightly larger leaf springs. You think it could of been correct before the leaf springs may have sagged a bit?

If you look in the picture you can see one of the springs. They look almost stock?

Here's some photos. Your guess to the lift is as good as mine. The PO gave very little info on the lift. It has 32"x10.5" tires for a size reference. Perhaps a smaller angle shim in the rear axle might lower the angle?

If it has a 4 inch suspension lift you will have to get SYE/CV driveshaft to eliminate the drive vibes.

Standard shim from the factory for Rough Country springs I was told were 6 degrees. So on mine when it looked like that I ordered the 4 degree shims and waiting on the Brown Santa to bring this week.

Your pinion angle should be 2-4 dgrees lower than the shaft angle which helps to account for axle wrap.

Go to Tom Woods Shaft site home page right center 3/4 way down the page grey banner technical information and read about it all there. It is great and will leave you with a totally new perspective on driveline angles for these short shafted YJs.

Also is there any chance the 6 degrees are in still? Curious how they look compared to the 4 when you do that. Nice before and after would be a holy grail.

I have a 2004 rubicon. I just changed both axle joints. We took off front shaft to check all joints. We noticed that the shaft was hard to get off. Like the shaft was too long. When installed, slip joint is completely compressed. Is this normal?

no..it has to be able to compress when you hit bumps,etc. or it will bust the transfer case

not necessarily..one of my yj's has a spring over and has no vibration with the slip yoke..you just have to get the angle right

Well today i got around to the yj and sure enough the u joint was shot in the rear. Check out the wear in the picture. Also it was the original. After 130k miles and 18+years I do believe it was due for retirement.

Also keep in mind that the joint felt fine to the hand and only after removal was this damage visible. So to anyone with driveline vibes who just hand checked their joints it is best to pull it and look. Here's the new sexy grease-able one. Also take your old one to the auto parts store as the u joint was NOT the one specified in the computer.

Hey thanks for the info. It confirmed what I was already thinking. I shortened the shaft by 1 inch.
I haven't had it off road since I shortened it. But I'm sure it'll make a big difference.

4 degree shims arrive tonite from Brown Santa so will post up before and after driveline angle shots hope this is the last of the fixes for my vibes.
