E-Break and Airbag light on plus gear grinding

This is my first Jeep so I am very new to this. I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, 4 cylinder, 3 speed auto, 88,000 miles. Sometime when I back out of the garage the E-break and airbag lights stay on. If I try to shift out of Reverse into either Park or Neutral I get a loud gear meshing sound (like trying to shift a standard without using the clutch). If I turn the engine off, put it into Park and restart, no problem. The lights staying on do not bother me as much as the "gear mashing". Anybody else have this problem?
