I've only been driving a Jeep for two days (the loaner from the dealer until mine arrives at the lot), but a buddy of mine told me about a "Jeep wave" a couple of years ago. Being a Harley rider, I am familiar with friendly recognition, but have yet to get a wave back from anybody in a Wrangler (heck, I've even thrown a few waves towards some other models). On the Harley, it's typically clutch hand under the bar...is there some sort of trick for the Jeep wave? Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
Mike.

I usually just wave with my hand at the top of the wheel. I just wave with a few fingers but if they are at my side or behind me I'll lift up my arm and wave. Not really a secret code but a way to say "hey! You're cool to!" Lol do all makes of motorcycles wave or just Harley's?

That's the same wave I give to. Usually is the older jeeps that wave. Get a few waves from the Jk crowd, but not many.

So far almost all of the jeeps I've seen have waved. Washitonians are pretty friendly tho, must be that newly legal(ish) substance

Usually all bikers do...unless they are "too cool for school". ;-)

Aw man, that's not cool. Well, you're a long ways away from me, but I'll throw ya a wave. All wranglers all the time. If an old Cherokee, or covered in dirt, you get a wave too. I gave up on the rest. LJ owners still often do the dog-cocking-his-head-at-a-vacuum-look, but....

A guy from work got this for his wife and admits that she will never take it off road aside from possibly a dirt driveway. I did how ever tell him that he needs to remind her of the "wave" and enjoy the jeep way of life. I hope she at least gets the bug and takes it out.
I think I saw a tear in the head light knowing that off roading was a slim chance....

I went to a camp/trail site for 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, jeeps, atvs and whatever else you want, and everyone waved at each other while passing on the trails. There were some 4 wheelers in front of me and another jeep passed them and kind of waves at them and then he passed me and I waved and he got a huge smile across his face and he full arm waved at me. We high fives when we actually passed each other!

I've got to say I wondered what happened to the wave too. I've notice that once I get away from the big city far more people wave, though. Oh well, I'll keep waving and they'll keep glaring.

Did yall explain the rank thing? As in who waves first? Here's how I did it in the XJ.

If you see a:
CJ is like a general, you wave first, even if you are built up and they are bone stock.
YJ is like a colonel, you wave first, out of respect. YJers wave first only to CJs.
TJ is like a colonel, you wave first. TJers wave first to YJs and CJs.
JK is like a major. JKers wave first to all other Wranglers.

XJs, if built, are treated like foriegn offiers. You're not really sure of the rank, but that's ok. If you see a lift or mud tires, the wave will happen, maybe a little awkward, but ok. A built XJ would have the rank of a YJ or TJ.

XJs if bone stock, may wave to you, and you wave back.

In all the generations of Grands, they may initiate the wave. If you see a built one, it's hard to determine rank. Bottom line, if it's muddy, dirty and built, they may outrank you unless you are a CJ, of course.

Now when two JKs meet, the least built waves first. This will not be confusing as you learn to estimate tire sizes, spot bumpers and winches by brand, and can ID other do-dads at speed.

Honestly, I think the rank thing is silly. I wave anyway, but I don't feel like someone is superior to me because they put a lift and tires and have something 20 years old. If they don't want to acknowledge my mall crawler, doesn't matter to me. I will wave and smile and enjoy every time.

I'm with you on that. Gotta say that I'll wave to you - Mall crawler, stock, lifted, chromed, mudd covered, clean, dirty, old timer, battle scarred, stickers, soccer mom, no stickers, YJ, CJ, JK, whateverJ, no full size spare, 4 doors, top on, doors off, high schooler, DD, funky paint...I quote Tripper (aka Bill Murray in "Meatballs") "It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter!" =)

Ditto to these. Rank is dumb...no one is above another.

Finally got my first wave today Had the top down and doors off and a JK waved in Thibodaux while I was picking up my daughter from school.

On a related note, my daughter would prefer I not pick her up at school with the top down and the doors off....Very cool to her friends but it plays havoc with her hair

It's not that serious. It's all in jest.

The problem is there are a number of people who don't view it as "all in jest."

Waved to a few JK's today, zero waves back. When Jeeps are purchased they should come with a mini-waving manual. It doesn't bother me too much, but you look like an idiot waving to all these Jeeps when people are with you and you don't receive anything in return

My buddies probably think I'm crazy

Have notice the waving thing around isn't as big as it was... I still wave at the build jeep mostly because all the stock ones around here to "honor the code of waving " lol... If its a nice jeep I most likely know them any how

I took a sick coworker home yesterday. She commented that she knew I was outgoing but that she couldn't believe how many people I was waving at. I asked her if there was something in common with everyone I was waving at and to look at the people I was waving at. 5 minutes later she exclaims "Oh they are all Jeeps!" "That is so cool!"
