I owned a cherokee for years and never got waves except from friends of mine but recently I bought a 94 Wrangler and instantly the waves started from other Wrangler owners. New models to older models they all wave. I think its pretty cool and makes u feel your part of a brotherhood. The only thing I've noticed is that more men wave than women. No offense to women but maybe they just don't know...lol

Those that buy it because it's an SUV never wave, those who buy it because it's a Jeep always will...

If you see a:
CJ is like a general, you wave first, even if you are built up and they are bone stock.
YJ is like a colonel, you wave first, out of respect. YJers wave first only to CJs.
TJ is like a colonel, you wave first. TJers wave first to YJs and CJs.
JK is like a major. JKers wave first to all other Wranglers.

XJs, if built, are treated like foriegn offiers. You're not really sure of the rank, but that's ok. If you see a lift or mud tires, the wave will happen, maybe a little awkward, but ok. A built XJ would have the rank of a YJ or TJ.

XJs if bone stock, may wave to you, and you wave back.

In all the generations of Grands, they may initiate the wave. If you see a built one, it's hard to determine rank. Bottom line, if it's muddy, dirty and built, they may outrank you unless you are a CJ, of course.

Now when two JKs meet, the least built waves first. This will not be confusing as you learn to estimate tire sizes, spot bumpers and winches by brand, and can ID other do-dads at speed.
Funny, but man, that is way to complicated. Hell, sometimes I'm too caught up in enjoying just driving her with the top off to even notice other Jeeps...I feel bad, but only for a half a second, then I'm back to loving life again.

Though I only just finally bought my JK from my friend, he had already loaned it to me on and off for about a year. I noticed The Wave immediately (maybe because I used to drive a VW bus, another waving culture), and see it from about 95% of other Jeeps. That said, I live in a resort area, and I've noticed that The Wave drops to about 40% during vacation season. I think there are a lot of seasonal Jeepers who only get out when the sun's shining.

Before my jeep I used to ride a bike and everyone in a bike waves under bars but apparently jeep owners down south don't know what it is, I still wave and knot at them as I pass them but I get this look as if they are thinking" wtf who is that..."

I ride a suzuki and all the harley guys wave at me and most of the import guys do. Some of the import guys shouldnt be on a bike and those guys usually dont wave. Harley guys wont wave at me if i accidently pull a wheelie at a light. Shrug.

Sadly it's not just women anymore.....kids are so focused on electronics and the next big app/phone/ect that the basics of car care(or anything physical) has just gone out the window

After a night out with some girlfriends my daughter told me she was the only one in the car that knew how to pump gas! Another time she had to change a flat tire because nobody else knew what to do. Not sure how these kids got hold of a set of keys to a car without knowing the basics but they did. My husband made sure both our kids had basic skills even before they had a license.

Seriously, it's pretty sad. But you are correct, it all starts with the parents. Hence why when my daughter is a little older I'll be teaching her as much as i can.

No body seems to want to be parents anymore. They'd all rather be their kids friends than anything.

X2!!!

I had to laugh, no telling how many times my daughters told me that one of her "guy" friends have called on her to help change a flat, jump there battery, or figure out why their car won't start. They think it's cool that she carries her own jumper cables, tool kit, and small floor jack in the back of her Jeep!
She's been out in the garage with me since she was a toddler. Now she does all the routine maintenance on her own TJ, and is always greasy elbow deep with me in all the repairs and mods.

It's sad how many people don't know the basics of vehicles. I'm 17, and I've been working at an oil change and gas station for 4 years. I partly manage (family business) and I make contacts and take large scale actions for our business. Everyone is shocked to see someone as young as me in this day and age knowing and working on so many vehicles, and I'll tell you this right now, it's not just ignorant teens who are clueless about vehicles. I've had adult men come into our shop to have us fill up his washer fluid because he had no idea how. It's not rare. I've even had people own a diesel vehicles for years and come into the gas station, fill up with gas, and run in side and yell "I put gas in my car! What do I do!!" Really? You really forgot you own a diesel? And don't get me started with the kids in my school when It comes to vehicles...

If you're in a Wrangler, you're getting a wave from me. I don't care who you are. I've come to realize there are such diversities in life that owning a Jeep and feeling equal for that split second as you pass on the road is pretty cool.

I was at a stop light today with another wrangler across the intersection from me. I waved and he never waved back. So I kept waving until he waved back. When he was finally passing me.

You gotta wave, if you see a Jeep. Gotta help if you see someone stuck, just the way i think it should be. I was stuck with my mates in a Toyota land cruiser & my jeep was out if reach but some Jeep dude pulled up a long side us & UN stuck us. Now when the haters start a dig at the jeep, I can remind them why you don't need a computer control camera network & 100 large to go wheeling:-) Check out this mall crawling bling not mine but mighty fine!
