Well around here (IL side of St.Louis) CJ's, YJ's, and most TJ's wave and only a select few JK's wave ... I wave no matter what... but if the "Heavily modded jeeps" don't wave, I would bet that them rigs are bought, not built but the owners.

Here in Lawrence, KS, home of the University of Kansas, it seems to be more of a problem with the students, male and female. Anyone over 40 in any Wrangler waves.

I'm new to the Jeep comm, but I knew about the wave. Its the same concept as on a motorcycle, it's nice to see another bike on the road and its like a brotherhood. Same with Jeeps (mostly wranglers)...However, the Jeep guys in Florida either don't like to wave back, or don't know about it. I wave at every wrangler and maybe only get 1 wave back a day

I had been getting waves about 60% of the time but went 0-6 the last round trip to work.

I'm originally from Utah and I can say back in my hometown Layton most jeep owners wont give you the waive back. I am fairly modded, lift, winch, lockers armor and lots of witness marks. Now I'm stationed in Texas and everybody waives here, Some jeep owners will even extend there arm completly out of the side of there window to make sure I see them waive.

We're also new to the Jeep comm and my husband and I were having this exact conversation this afternoon. I thought we wave just to other Wranglers, he's been waving at every Jeep on the road! Who's right?

typically you just wave to wranglers and cj's. i also will wave to other models that are modded, if you wave to stock xj, kj, xk, zj's, etc they look at you like you are crazy.

Thank-you for clearing that up jgano23! That explains the weird looks and reluctance to wave

My wife was with me when she got her first wave. What blew her her away, was the driver and passenger waved through the open top and stuck their legs out the doorless sides. She looked over at me and asked, "Is that normal?" I told her to get used to it and to make sure she waves IF she ever gets to drive the Jeep.

I'm not ready to give up the key, yet.

Well I owned a TJ for a couple of years before moving to my current JK. I ALWAYS WAVE. I even forget and wave while in my wifes car sometimes. When my wife drives the JK she knows the one rule and that is she must wave at every WRANGLER she sees.

I also agree that JK owners dont wave as much. So my new plan is to honk and wave at every JK and maybe they will start catching on.

That might help. Down here in FL, I've noticed that most wranglers with the windows up (AC on) don't wave. If they are open-air (any style) they will.

I think we ought to get the dealers to explain it to first time buyers. I'm 2 for 5 today.

Doesn't count for the morning commute. It was pitch black. 3 Wranglers in a row driving through the gate (military installation). Even the guard commented on it. I was number 2.

I notice that older people driving jeeps don't wave, not the younger ones. I just got a 2010 JK and I get the wave from about 80% of the wranglers that pass me...its usually soccer moms that don't wave that have the 4 doors

Our salesman at the dealership asked us "do you know about the Wave"? Although we're in our late fifties, new Jeep owners and drive a 4 door JK we scour the horizon for our next "buddy" to wave at

Ya know, for WV to be such a "friendly" state... And where half of the population drive some form of Jeep.. no one waves. :-( I've waved at a few, to no avail. Rather disappointing :-/ Back in the summer I bought a 370Z roadster and every time I'm out with the top down I get a huge urge to wave at other convertibles. lol

That's how things are done down here in Texas, we are a friendly state.

I wave at all Jeeps, if I don't get a return wave from its driver that's "ok" because I know the "Jeep" felt it!

So I ask of you If you happen to be passing a Dealership and you happen to have time stop in and talk to the sales associates and explain "The Jeep Wave" to them and ask for them to pass on the wave to all new owners of Jeeps.

I got my first 'wave' yesterday! (It was from a guy in a customized CJ) My son decided to start waving at every Jeep we saw and we got the wave from every one of them except an older man in another JK. He looked at us like we were crazy. lol Age might have played a factor there. But it's funny that all the 2-doors waved and the other JK didn't... :-/ Why is that? BTW - I would have a 2-door if it wasn't for the fact that I have 2 big boys. My 14 yr old is 6' 1" and 195 lbs. and just wouldn't fit in the back when all 4 of us had to ride. I love my JK but I want to get a 2 dr as soon as I can.

My other car is a Subaru STi and all those drivers give the wave. With my jk, it seems as though only other jeeps with mods will wave back. Still nice when it happens.

I get quite a few waves and waves back around here, but most of them are from older guys with CJ's, YJ's and TJ's... I wave to alot of younger people my age and they look at me like im crazy! and JK's i get the same response most of the time. i do get a few waves from modded cherokees here and there but not to often.

I try to wave to all fellow jeepers, rarely get a response from JK's around here... well unless its my brother... CJ's, YJ's , and TJ's with or without mods all tend to wave back... except the teenagers with a cell phone surgically attached to their skulls....

Back when I lived in Texas, nearly every Wrangler would wave as I drove in my LJ. SC was the same. I'm Jeepless in FL now, but hope to remedy that soon. I miss the wave!

When I wave to a stock JK in street tires, I almost never get a wave back. I'm guessing these are the people who think of their Jeep as "just another vehicle" and either don't know or care enough to wave. You're being lumped in with those people.

The basic formula is:

(age of jeep) x (number of mods) = likelihood of waving

It does depend on location. Here in SoCal there are too many people that have a jeep because it's southern California and it's the vehicle to have, the perfect beach vehicle. I've waved to every jeep I come across, old and new and have gotten 3 waves back and I've had my jeep since August. I've known about the wave since the beginning of high school over ten years ago and that was is North Carolina. The south is notorious for the wave, especially in the country side. It was awesome though at the time I dislike the south for the only fact that it was...southern. Now I appreciate it and miss it alot. There is a sense of "home" that SoCal is missing and when it comes to taking care of one another, as much as pulling them out of a rut or just waving...San Diego is missing it entirely.

Like many of you guys have said, it's the look, the fact they have a jeep and don't know about the constant modifications that are done, the history, the tradition...

It's strange to say but after getting my jeep I compare, look at other jeeps and can see them coming a mile away....hmmm...perhaps I'm not the only one. I know there are other people that see jeeps coming the opposing direction and have no idea but they see us waving...they see us giving them acknowledgement of a tradtion yet nothing in return.

On anoher topic, I do maintenance and all the work I can feasibly do on my jeep to ensure she is running in top notch, smooth, everything working as it should. So of course, it goes without saying, I care for my jeep very much along with what I have. My neighbor, a fellow jeeper of a lifted TJ and large tires and very nice looking vehicle has never...I quote you...never looked under the hood of his jeep. I asked him to jump me and he said, "which side is the battery on?" Come one!! That really annoyed me because I feel that every man should at least know how to jump a car let alone know where it's located. Which he had no idea how to jump the car either. I was so let down. It's all about an image for some. For me, and I know I'm rambling, but I like to know the inner workings of things as much as I can. Or at least know where it's located. hahaha. Ok....nuff said.
