Electric fans

Anybody running an electric fan? I've been studying up on them and it doesn't seem like an upgrade that will be worth the trouble. Actually, after the loss of power due to the drag on the alternator, it isn't really an upgrade. At least, that's what I am thinking. I wanted to see what the masses had to say about it before I totally disregarded the idea.

I ran an electric fan for a while on my last Jeep, and didn't really notice a big difference. I wouldn't do it again.

Jeepcrawler98, I saw somewhere that you mentioned that you use a Taurus fan. How is that working out for you? I read somewhere else that someone had trouble mounting one and couldn't use it. How is yours mounted?

I used a fan off a 80's chev FWD car. Fan is very low profile and covers my entire rad. Now, I have a 94 YJ 4 cyl so I don't know what the clearance issues would be for a 6 cyl.

You might want to rethink your reasoning about the "drag" of the alternator on your engine. That drag on the alternator is much less than the drag of the engine driving a fan ALL the time. Also, most 4x4ing is done at low speeds and RPM's. So, you can manually switch the fan on (if you have too) to full speed at idle and low speeds and switch it off for deep water crossings. Another plus is that drag on the alternator is eliminated at speeds above 40 KPH when the fan wouldn't be running.

The fan on my jeep never even comes on in normal city driving and off road it comes on every 5-10 minutes for about 10 seconds if I'm moving real slow. I set my fan thermostat to come on at about 200 degrees and off at 180 and the thermostat is in the lower rad hose.

I really like it and it works well. I haven't noticed any power gains or gas mileage but I think it is a better and more adjustable setup.

I personally have decided against the electric fan for my application, and I really have no idea in a performance difference. I do know that the engine fan is a clutch fan and onl;y runs when it is needed and not all the time. If it does, replace it.

Coincidently, I just talked to my buddy that bought my old 4x4 dakota. It has the v-6 in it, not the magnum though. He wants me to come over this weekend and help him put a fan from a Ford Focus in it. The amperage draw won't be an issue because I had a beefed up AC Delco alternator built for it. This could be interesting. I'll post on it Sunday or Monday with the results.

Might try to get pictures of it too.

well with my jeep and the mods I had to go with the electric too much flex and the fan would have been in the radiator... so no big deciscion hell performance who cares my jeep rides a trailer.....

dang boys how yall getting those things running that cool? lol mine sits at 225 on-road an hit 245-250 off road...of course i have a bored 350 (361) and about 475-500 ponies and close to that in torque...maybe i just need an aluminum rad. wish i could get this beast to run that cool.

I ran a taurus fan - it did free up some gas mileage actually for me. Yes there is additional drag on the alternator, but then again you're losing a big fan on the engine in exchange for something with a fairly efficient motor.

I switched back to mechanical again after burning up 3 junkyard taurus fans in a year or so. I don't think this was a fan design issue - but moreso the fact that they were.... junk! fans After I complete my engine swap I will be switching to a new unit - they're about 300 bucks from the Ford stealer here. They flow almost 4800CFMs, which is HUGE! As far as engine temps, it cooled MUCH MUCH MUCH better here in the AZ heat than my mechanical ever did. Engine never rose above 195 even in 120*F climbing long hills.... can't say that about the mechanical fan I have now.

They are easy to install as well, half the bolts already line up with the stock fan shroud holes, and the other two are easily added in with making some brackets out of flat stock (no welding needed!). Just make sure you get a fairly large relay to go along with it. The inrush (startup) current exceeds 100 amps sometimes, and it draws 33amps running on high speed. This doesn't mean you need a 100 amp relay or fuse even, but you can't use your average 30amp parts house special of course. A 40 or 50 amp supposedly will do the job just fine - I ran an 80Amp 100% duty cycle solenoid that was used for diesel glow plugs. I still use it today to turn on and off stuff, even though I don't use the fan anymore - so I'd say that route is reliable as well. Any napa carries it - the P/N is ST-85

Just curious - are you running a fan shroud? I'm a firm believer that you should be able to get a big engine to run just as cool as the vehicle they original came in, or at least close. Most of the "hot" running engine swaps I've seen in older Jeeps were all due to the fact that they didn't have a shroud. Of course, if you think it's a mechanical fan causing the issue.... well you know what I'm gonna say

Hey David, before you buy one of those you might check with Joe Daro at Absolute in Phoenix. He just picked up a vendor deal with Sanderson Ford. It might work out to save you a few bucks.
