Extended Warranty... What's your take?

Buying from Carmax (I know it's a love/hate relationship for ppl).

'04 Wrangler X - everything seems to check out fine as vehicles go. This will be my first Jeep/Wrangler so I thought I'd extract some info from the wise.

I was thinking of getting the 1yr warranty which seems to cover most of the major components but it's $1,000 extra... which is on the high side.

1) Anyone not get an (extended) warranty and regret it??
2) Any special surprises in the '04 models I should be weary of? (more reason to shell out the $$$)?

Thanks.

I bought a 2005 and it already had an extended warrenty, but I had to transfer it for $100. Mine covers all powertrain. I have already used it twice and if I didn't have it, I would have already spent over 2K since I got it which was 6 months ago... so I feel that they are a good thing myself.

I purchased the extended with mine and it has already paid for itself. For $1,000, I would go for it. Just make sure that it is a Chrysler Warranty Plan.

On a related note, does anyone know if Chrysler extended warranty, Factory backed extended warranties for Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles is a legit site for obtaining a genuine chrysler extended warranty? Played around with some of the option fields and it looks like you can even purchase a maxcare lifetime warranty for a 2-3 yr old vehicle that's past the 36k basic warranty. I'm debating if it's worth the $3k for a lifetime/unlimited mileage maxcare warranty for my 2010 Wrangler.

$1K is WAY TOO HIGH for a 1-Yr Extended Warranty! I bought mine through my Credit Union for $700, and it's a Power Wrap Warranty, up to and including 10-Yr/100K Miles. Shop around!

Best of Luck!

Cheers!

In most cases its a rip off
but when it comes to a wrangler
its a good thing to look in too
1000 a year sounds high though
I would look for something longer

I got an extended warranty thru Fidelity I think it is and it was $1500 . . . I was still under the factory 3y/36k one but this one extends for 7y/70k. Probably a good idea to pick one up especially if you aren't going to mod it too much. But that sounds really expensive for just one year.

Read what it covers and what it doesn't carefully, including any clauses relating to modifications and extreme use. Depending on how you plan to use your rig, it may be a good deal. However, $1,000 for one year seems really high, but you didn't mention the mileage, and at 5 years old, I suspect any warranty is going to cost more than one purchased on a newer or still under warranty vehicle. OH, and you want to be sure you understand not only what's covered, but if there are restrictions on who handles the work, etc.

If you are adding that warranty to the financing it is costing you more like $1500. If anything goes wrong with the vehicle in the next year, you have already spent $1500. The question you need to ask yourself is do you think you will incur a repair bill larger than $1500 in the next year? Think about this, even if you had a repair that cost $2000, it will really only be $500 more than if you had gotten the warranty. IMHO $1000 for a one year warranty is not worht it.
