Question First time Jeep buyers needs advise!!

After 3 days and 200 Jeeps later, I narrowed it down to 2 Jeeps. I would like to get expert advise on which one to get.

Jeep #1
'06 Wrangler X
24,331 miles
Soft top with Stock half doors
Nice huge BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires with Nice Black wheels.
4 x 4 with Rough Country Suspension Systems

Jeep #2
'07 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara
31,585 miles
Soft top with full 4 doors
Stock wheels and tires
2 Wheel drive

We're a family of 4 (big kids) and most likely will not go off-road (just camping). I like the sahara since it's 4 doors but it's 4x2. I love the big tires on X but worried about noise with half doors and soft windows....

Please help me choose!! Thanks!

i would go drive both if you have not. the X obviously doesn't have a lot of room, will be a harder ride, and you could be seeing wear with the Rough Country suspension, meaning you would have to replace or do maintenance on some parts. The 07 will ride nicer, have more room and will be more family friendly.

that being said, if you live up north where there is snow, i don't no why 2wd vehicles would be considered.

i think it would be more appropriate for you to get Jeep 2 if your just going camping and not offroad all the time. if your going to be in the mud, going over rocks ETC jeep #1 is for you

Dear MD4P, thanks for ur input. We live in Dallas where we get maybe one snow storm per year. I like the Sahara but having a 2 wheel drive wrangler is, to me, an oxymoron.... But having 2 big boys is making this decision so tough... I don't know anything about Rough Country suspension but those tires look so damn nice!! My wife won't let me put any money into it so whatever I buy will stay as is.
I'm going out to drive both tomorrow so hopefully I'll make the right choice.

Considering the family, I'd go jeep #2.

Big, that's my wife's choice but am I gonna regret not getting the 4x4 later? Not that I'm gonna use it a lot but I don't want to be known as a wannabe Jeep owner...

You also have the OPTION to keep looking. Trust me, the RIGHT JEEP IS out there!
Being your FIRST, is more reason IT should be perfect in EVERY way your GUT says.

You do not want BUYERS REMORSE because of anxiety.

why only a 3 day search?
200 jeeps and those are your only options?

there is simply no point in a 2WD wrangler, it defeats the whole purpose of a jeep and you will regret it.
I die a little bit inside every time I see one.

there has to be 4WD 4dr wranglers available near you

4 x 4 with Rough Country Suspension Systems

Those nice huge BFG and the Rough Country suspension (which is less than stellar, btw) tell me that whoever owned if before you probably wheeled it. Which means that, even if the seller has fixed things up a good bit, there are problems there just waiting to happen. The lift also tells me it was most likely used by someone who modded it on the cheap, and wasn't too concerned for caring for it properly. Better to buy something you know hasn't been abused and, if you want, mod it yourself later.

Jeep #2
'07 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara
31,585 miles
Soft top with full 4 doors
Stock wheels and tires
2 Wheel drive

I'd be inclined to go with this one, except for the 2-wd. Why Jeep even sells those is beyond me. That's what Lincoln Continentals are for. They don't hold their value nearly as well as other Jeeps, and if you buy it you're very likely purchasing a tarbaby.

We're a family of 4 (big kids) and most likely will not go off-road (just camping). I like the sahara since it's 4 doors but it's 4x2. I love the big tires on X but worried about noise with half doors and soft windows....

It it were me, I'd keep looking. I know that's not what you wanna hear, but I'm not on the payroll.

Sorry man.

There are tons of 4x4 Unlimiteds out there. All of the Unlimiteds have 4-doors, and probably about half of them (more in Dallas) have soft tops.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for the advises! Being new to this forum, I'm overwhelmed by the awesome responses!!

@Timberwolf: The reason I only had 3 days search is because my car died on me last Friday and need to find a replacement right away for work. I wish I could wait to find the right one but unfortunately the time is of the essence. I looked at every single wrangler within 100 mile radius within my price range and those 2 were my best choices... There are tons of other 4x4 unlimiteds out there but unfortunately out of my price range...

@kbwwolf: Thank you for your awesome input! Those high school days are long gone and now I'm in my mid 40's. I know the 4 door is more practical for my fam but I think my mid-life crisis is kicking in for the X. :-) I did find few 4x4 unlimiteds but were a little out of my price range.... So~~ I'm pretty much stuck on choosing between the two. All of the other ones are either too expensive, wrong color (for my wife...), or too many miles.

I saw the unlimited over the weekend but haven't drove it yet. I'm going to see the X today for the test drive. I need to make my decision buy one today.
Any warning signs I should be looking for regarding the rough country suspension?
As kbwwolf mentioned above, I don't want to end up having to replace anything right after I buy it....

Personnally, I would say if you need a 4 door, then stick with a 4 door, but then again I wouldn't buy a 2wd Jeep either. So, I would say keep looking.

What's the resale value on a 2wd Jeep anyway?

how big of a lift is on it?
how big are the tires?

things to watch for:
excessive road noise
vibrations at speed (death wobble)
loose steering
odd tread wear patterns

don't discount higher mileage jeeps, all mine are pushing or are over 200K

have you considered renting one for a week or 2?

Your best bet is to have someone who knows Jeeps go with you to the dealer and look at it, preferably a mechanic. Barring that, there are some things you can look for on your own...it's a bit different than buying a used car.

A couple of links:

eBay Guides - Buying a used Jeep Wrangler

What To Look For When Buying A Used Jeep 4X4 « JEEP PARTS

It concerns me that you're not dealing from a position of strength. You need a vehicle quickly, want a Jeep, and are limited in your resources. A salesman is gonna smell this like wolves smell rotting meat.

Hopefully, you'll exercise at least enough restraint that if there are serious problems with either of the Jeeps you're looking at, you'll walk away.

I took a bus to work in Dallas for almost a month at one point. Rode a motorcycle (yeah, in winter) for almost six.

If you buy a POS simply to have a vehicle now, you may end up costing yourself more in the long run than if you went without and found another way to get to work for a short time.

My two cents.

Good luck.

I would keep looking. You did not include the price of the two Jeeps and did not mention your budget. Let us know your budget and what year range you are willing to buy and I am sure someone on here can keep an eye out and point you to some good deals. Good luck!

Thank you!
After spending 7 hours at the dealership, I finally bought the new 2012 Wrangler S in Crush clear (Bright orange). A little out of my price range but I'm super happy with it!!
I had to have them take off the stock side steps to agree on the price. lol

Now I need a after market side step running board... Any suggestions on where to go to get the best deal on Jeep Accessories??

Also, I have been quite happy with Quadratec and AutoAnything. As far as eBay goes it's like anything else you buy there. You have to know and be comfortable with their seller rating, return policy, shipping charges, etc.

For me, I have found that the best thing to do is to first decide what I want (like side steps) to get, then search around the WF here for the brand and model most folks think will best suit my needs. After I get the brand/model info from all the great folks here on the WF, I go Internet shopping for best price/terms and most reputable seller. It makes outfitting my Wrangler pretty easy and lots of fun.

Thanks Celtic. I'm a total newb with limited budget (due to my wifey...) so I'll start customizing slow~~ly. I'm sure I'll b back on this forum often to get advises on where to start regarding mods.

BTW, I got the 2012 Wrangler S 4x4, 2DR, Crush Orange, Automatic.
More than what I wanted to spend from used Jeeps but I FREAKIN' LOVE IT!!
The new engine was a huge difference from '06 and '07 s.
