Flat Black Paint Job -- Yes or No?

Hey guys,

I did a brief search but didn't find too much conversation on this. I love the flat / matte finish, and I'm considering doing this on my jeep. From what I understand there's a vinyl wrap, or a paint job.

I found this image on another forum, what do you think?

It seems like paint would be preferable, I wonder if the wrap can be scratched and peeled.

I think it looks amazing. With some gloss black highlights

It does look tough. What about spray on bed liner. I just did my new bumper with it and it looks the same color as that pic. plus it would hold up to most anything.

You might want to do some research on scratches in flat black paint. I've heard it scratches really easy, and you can't buff it - it just makes it start to shine. And there won't be any waxes/cleaning stuff you can use.

It does look awesome. But I'm with Geoff, how I understand it, the flat blacks are pretty "touchy". Personally I'd bedline the whole thing.

"prima donna." It's Italian for "first lady." (think "star of the show").

"PreMadonna" is, I would guess, Lady Gaga?

And my Jeep is a 1980 CJ7 that's so buggered up my boss won't let me use it on photo shoots. So there!

Or that Blonde you keep putting in all the Bestop videos. based on the responses here I'd say she steals the show from you Geoff.

Britta is definitely a PreMadonna, and she definitely steals the show from me. I'm thinking I'm just there to make her look even better by comparison. But you are stuck with me.

pheobo:

I saw a Lotus where they did flat black with one shiny black stripe on it. Awesome look!

It might be cool to do a shiny black stripe down the side on a Wrangler.

I've seen worse. Maybe "flat salmon" will be all the rage at SEMA this year.

haha, nice photoshop G-Pur. maybe throw some spinners on it.

Geoff, yeah man that looks sweet as hell. I like the combination of the flat body and highlights with black gloss. Interior black on black covers.

hmmm.. deifnitely looks good, upkeep is another question, though.

House of kolor make a flattening agent( 1 part FA01 Flattening Agent to 1 part RU311 Medium Reducer) to the klear coat mix. Some body shop will not try it. I went to 1 paint shop and ask them a couple days ago and they wouldn't do it. $2500 qoute they gave me for a 2 stage paintjob.

A professional body wrap quote for a wrangler jeep is $1500 in my area. There is a company that sell 4 x 5 sheet for $80 in black matte. You can buy 4 sheets and install yourself. It sticks on and then you use a blow dryer to apply heat after you rub the wrinkles out. Just like installing tint on windows.

Or have it Rhino or Line x for $1500. (check Avatar pic, bad ass)

Or herculine it yourself for $100. I think i'm trying this route. Herculine the inside, rocker panel, grill, tailgate and fender first. If I like the texture, I will continue on the rest of the jeep. If the look isn't the texture I want,I will have Line X spray the hood and side of jeep for me.

Spray it with the flat/matte black then clear coat it. Any scratches as long as not really deep will be in the clear coat.

Looks great.
Another thought on flat black is that eventually the high spots will polish up.
Body lines, places where you touch all of the time will eventually become somewhat shiny. Like Geoff said, you wouldn't be waxing it and stuff.

It could be a maintenance nightmare but would look schmidt hot when it was fresh.

Gpur - GREAT photochop!

There is a shop out here in Elsinore that shoots the matte. There is a, wouldn't say CLEAR coat but it cleans up just like any other paint job. My wife wants our white YJ done. Honestly I think we are going to go with the wrap. Not as expensive. Now as far as rhino or any other type of liner.... too much added weight I would think and how about the insulating properties? I would think that it would be a heat issue out here on the SOUTHERN west coast. IMO

Ever since I was a young 'un, I wanted a flat black / satin black Porsche 928. Never could afford it though. This summer, I will be painting our Jeep satin black with some hot rod flames on it. Very similar to my friend's 5-window that we painted. When I get the new meats on it, it's gonna look sick!

Just curious about this - not trying to talk anyone out of painting their Jeeps.

Would a flat black paint job get super hot? With no reflective properties, it would absorb the sun, right? Would it make the metal a bit hot to the touch?

In Arizona, would it get hot enough to create a plasma hole in the universe and suck in all life as we know it?
