For the experienced trailler towers....

I just acquired a used trailer from one of my brothers, fixed it up with my kids' assistance, and had one question about "tuning" it.

It has a 1-7/8" ball, and the hitch (the part on the trailer that "surrounds" the ball) is adjustable. There seems to be quite a bit of play when the hitch is locked over and around the ball - probably about 3/8"-1/2" of upward movement. My question is, how snug should it be after adjustment? Should there be any upward movement of any kind, or should it be snug, only allowing for rotational movement?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Your trailer tongue is a 2". When you put it on a 1 7/8" ball, you will get that much play. Not safe. Get a 2" ball and test fit it before you swap them out.

By tongue, I assume you're talking about the trailer-side component, correct? If so, it's stamped on the top, "Use 1-7/8" ball ONLY", unless you're talking about a different part - I'm easily confused.

If it says 1 78 on trailer tongue and your ball is 1 7/8 then it should work. How is it adjustable? And do you have the locking mechanism latched down?

Edit

Always use safety chains and cross them.

Is this a trailer to tow behind the Jeep or a trailer to tow the jeep with?

Agreed - safety chains - ALWAYS.

And, yes - the locking mechanism is down and locked. It's adjustable similar to what's shown in the attached image - you can increase the tension of the ball clamp by turning the nut. I just wanted to know what would be considered too tight - some play or no play.

And, this is a trailer to be towed by the Jeep, not to tow the Jeep.

I haven't seen one that is adjustable with the nut in years. If it was mine I would change it out for a newer hitch.

I'm anal about trailer safety. My mom was killed by an unsafe trailer that someone was pulling without safety chains.

Well, upon further investigation, and taking to heart the comments above, $14 at Menards for a new tongue assembly seems like cheap insurance. The last thing I want to do is "cheap out" and endanger my family or anyone else's. Thanks for the help.

Just bought a 4x8 trailer to pull WITH the quad here for our farm and it is 1 7/8 ball and it is adjustable. I would start by adjusting the nut on the bottom as your pic shows before replacing.
