I want to know if i can use a 28 spline 8.8 carrier with the spider gears of the 31 spline 8.8 welded in. All this in the 31 spline housing.

Let me make sure I understand you right. You have a 31 spline axle housing with axle shafts and you want to put in a 28 spline carrier with 31 spline spider gears. If that is true then no you cannot. The spline count on your axle shafts needs to be the same as spline count on the carrier.

But it might be fun to watch someone try to put it together.

are the carriers different or just the side gears?

Your correct in your thinking, the spider gears is what denotes the spline count, not the carrier....Now as far as will the 31 spline spiders fit a case that originally had 28 spline spiders, I'm not sure anyone will know unless they have tried it themselves..... What are you up too? Are you needing a 31 spline case with spiders?

Your absolutely right. The spider gears are bits that are splined. It was late last night and I wasn't thinking.

Good catch mate.

i havent tried yet but after setting up my gears and then trying to slide in the axle shafts was when i noticed it was a smaller spline count. The only difference in the carrier i see is that the cross pin is 3/4" instead of the 7/8". It seems that the only thing stoping me is the spider gears being 28 spline. All i want to do is put my 31 splined spider gears in and weld em.
