Free(ish) gas!

Hey all,

I've posted this once or twice but I figured I would put it out there. So I don't "pay" for gas for my TJ. I donate plasma every week and in return they pay $240 a month. Plasma is some cool stuff that makes many medications so its always in need. Check your area for donation centers.

I just bought my Jeep recently and since I'm in grad school money is truly tight. I use mine as a DD (and a toy) so that cash really helps.

Ok, figured I'd seen a lot of threads where people where moaning about gas- here is an option for some...

Cheers

south ga jeeper here. looking into plasma. where do you donate, red cross?

how long does it take? any pain / irritation? tired or weak after? there a diet that would help to make it not have as much of an effect on you?

i'm not so hard up that i need the money. but i'm the type thats super tight with money and if i can get 240/mo for doing basically nothing.... i'm all ears

Just like giving blood and takes a little more time but not too much. I did it back in the early '90s when I was under employed.

So the donation process is very similar to giving blood. The people at the center I goto are so good I don't feel the needle. As far as fatigue, that's rare since the blood is spun so the plasma comes out and the machine actually gives you back your red blood cells. Eat a good diet of food and plenty of water and its a total breeze... Heck, I'm writing from the center now on my phone. Gas money, here we go!!

Is it just a red cross center?

Paying for your gas in blood, eh? Well, don't worry...we're all going to be doing that soon!

I'm actually surprised they pay for it. Normally (at least all the times I've donated blood or plasma) it's a volunteer thing.

Well blood is a volunteer thing. I have given plasma for over ten years both here in Ga and Fl and they paid. It may be a regional thing...not sure about that honestly.

My brother "donates" plasma, he came home the other day an his arm, from the middle of his fore arm to the lower part of his bicep, was black and blue and he couldn't straighten it out because they had missed with the needle a few times and it been about a week since that happened and it's still pretty bruised and he can't move it all the way still. I've also heard that it's not good for you either, since they take the blood and then give it back to you some of the red blood cells die, again just things I've heard about. Ive tried to donate in my area and got turned away because my tattoo on my fore arm is to close to area where they take it from, I have found places that will take it anyway so not sure why some won't and some will lol make sure you read up on it before going, it is a good way to make some extra cash when you need some but I wouldn't do it all the time, just my opinion

That happens with inexperienced nurses/volunteers. I had it happen when I was younger, both arms on the same day. Never let them tell you which vein is best, ALWAYS go for the biggest one. Why? Sometimes they're trying to to train getting the small one. Ha.

I'm looking into this now. If I can make an extra $200ish/month, that supports part of my Jeep/ammunition/etc. habits.

Well, that stinks about the bad experience but things like that happen in life. I personally have done this for 10 years and never had a bad experience.

Best of luck to those who think its something they could do!

Its a bit longer then donating whole blood, but you can do it more often. some friends and I financed a trip to go see Brooks and Dunn quite some time ago on donating plasma.

I have the spots (scars) on my veins from plasma donations way back when. They are like bullseyes anytime someone needs to draw blood. Then of course I get the are you a druggy stare for a second

I donate blood at my high school...next blood drive is this week. I never thought about getting money for that kind of stuff though. Im 16 and getting a parent signature EVERY WEEK because of my age would be a tad annoying.

The reason you get paid for blood plasma is typically because the plasma center sells it to cosmetic companies.. which they in turn use it in make up and such

donating plasma isnt that bad...i only did it once and they basically asked me not to come back lol. I clot really fast and it clogged the machine and this was a smaller place that didnt have a thinner they could use on me...

But yeah, the needle doesnt hurt much at all and its actually pretty easy...just browse the forum on your phone, listen to music, or read a book while you lay down on the mattress thingy
