FREE Oil Change

Yesterday, our local Jeep/Chrysler Dealership held a "FREE Oil Change" event at the Dealership.

Obviously the idea is to sell cars, but I'm wondering how common these events are?

I was "due" for an oil change" after the most recent trip the wife and I took to Ohio (from CT) for a family wedding, so of course I took advantage of it!

Any "typical" nature to these types of events by Jeep/Chrysler?

A local dealer here did that when they switched ownership. I thought that was pretty cool (for me) until I got the lamest call the next day. The used car mgr said she "heard" about my jeep from the service dept and they were really impressed with it's looks, condition, mileage, etc. And they "rarely see Wranglers in such good shape and would like to make an offer on it", blah, blah, blah. What BS. I was insulted they thought I was that stupid. "Oh, really, wow, I'm so flattered, sure I'll take what ever you give me". So I played the game and told them I would take their offer for trade in. IF they would trade me an 07 JK (what she was trying to sell me at the time) that is identical to my TJ (sahara, same color, uprgraded axles, premium sound sys, dual tops - tint on both, lifted, wheels/tires, etc) if they could give me the same pymt for the same term left on mine. She ended that call pretty quickly.

man, thats lame. i've never heard of selling cars that way. i do know its a way for the service department to sell work. they get you to come in for free, and then try to nail you w/ a bunch of repairs.

Funniest part about that little "technique" they were using like I described above...
They made that same call to a customer that was really having a bad time with the service dept and his TJ had been there several days and they were really having it out. The dealer was accusing of lack of maintenance, etc. So, while he's standing there arguing with them he gets a phone call...from the used car mgr about 75' away in the sales office giving him the same spiel as above. They no longer use that sales tactic.

Two jeep dealers around me have things for jeep owners every once in a while. The last one I went to I got a jeep compass/stopwatch in a steel box and a nice 30 piece jeep barbecue kit in a folding case and some T shirts. The Honda dealer has a owners shop sunday where owners can come in and do oil changes and tune ups, use the shop lifts and the parts room is open.

that is un heard of, the liability alone is a problem. customer technically can't enter a shop area for insurance liability reasons. someone stubs their tow on something and will sue

Guess the dealership figures that anyone who would buy a Jeep Wrangler is no "girlie boy" and would be "ok" in the Service bay! ....

I think they got around it by having those that want to participate join the dealer sponsored club.

ct-tj: I was thinkin the same thing man!! I'm in CT as well (Wallingford)..maybe we should join forces and see if we can't get a dealership in our area to sponsor a club (the benefits would follow).
Are you reasonably near the middle of the state?

dealerships arent always the best when sponsoring a club..

the one we are sponsored by has only given the club a couple hundred bucks in the last couple of years..

when 12 of our members has boughten a jeep off of them. not including every sale/premier they have our club goes too.. oh and also we sell/wear shirts that advertises for them.. not including the banners we display when we do go to a car show, or jeep premier.. ect..

they are paying very little for the great amount of advertisement we do for them.. hell during the chrysler cruise in, we had 3 members being interviewed by a local radio station, and each mentioned the dealership that sponsors us.. that alone is 500 bucks for every time their name was mentioned (FOR FREE)

oh and they told us we cant get another sponsor

MoA: I'm not surprised that the Dealership is not putting out any better than an old mare. They are interested in "profits," not expenditures. (Just like any business).

And also, "just like any business" it is not necessarily true that the staff GIVES a rats ass about the product they sell, either. (When I worked at McDonalds at 16, I hated the burgers!!)
