Fuel pressure problems

So, the fuel pump is 1 year and 4 months old in my 97. Has the 4.0 and a 15 gallon tank. It is the airtex pump which isn't under warranty any more . What it did was first, it over heated a little with as hot as it was today so I shut it off till it went back down to 210. Went to take off and it wouldn't start. Missing and hesitating real bad (lack of fuel) drove fine for a half hour then it would drop down to 200rpms, run like crap, then shoot up to 1800 rpms. Managed it to an orieleys, they pretty much told me to go f**k myself so I went to autozone where they loaned me a fuel pressure tester and gave me a very nice print out of diagnosing fuel pump problems. Hooked up the pressure tester and it was very erratic going rapidly from 45psi to 55psi then when it started to run like chit it dropped off to 10psi. Fuel pump right? Well it's less than a year and a half old and started right after it over heated. I don't know, I was just wondering if any one has had this happen or mayb pointers on diagnosing the problem. Isnt the regulator, filter and pump all the same in tank unit? I really don't wanna drop 300$ and the gas tank again (3/4 tank). Ugh, thanks for any and all help

Hmm, can't see how overheating would have caused the pump to fail. But anyhow, the pressure regulator is a separate part, also known as the anti drain back valve. But it does sit on top of the tank...

For S&G's try replacing the fuel pump relay. I've had them act up at times when they get hot. Hopefully it's something as simple as that for you.

Only other thing I can think of off the top of my head would be vapor lock occurring.
Fuel is boiling in the rail/injectors. Your fuel pressure would read wonky as as the fuel went from liquid to a gas the fuel pressure would go erratic and possibly even drop down to almost nothing.

Yea, I couldn't link the over heat to fuel pressure other than vapor lock also. It was very warm under the hood. I'm going to test it here in a little bit when everything is cooled down
