Gas mileage

What is the typical gas mileage for a 90 YJ? I'm getting around 11miles/gallon now.

Well I have an '87 4.2 with a motorcraft 2150 carb. It is also an automatic with 31/2" lift and 32x11.50 swampers on it. I get 14.3 mph consistently.

Bone stock 2012 Rubicon Unlimited, and I'm averaging between 17.3 and 18.8 mpg, according to the car's mileage "reader."

I'm a bit disappointed as I was hoping to be getting closer to the advertised 21 mpg, but it is what it is...

Stock 2000 TJ, 4.0 litre automatic, 15mpg around town, 19+ hiway. (In fact, just last week I topped 20 for the first time in a year.) That's with the hardtop on. With the top open, mileage takes a nose-dive.

There is an article in the San Antonio,Texas Express-News today about gas stations shorting people as much as 2 gallons or more. Funny in no case they received too much gas. I guess the computer may be a better guage of gas mileage.

What carb, lift, tires and gears do you have? All that figures into it and might help to get a good answer.

Without knowing any more than what you've stated, my bet would be the carb. If you've got a Motorcraft 2150, then I'd look at the power valve, or just biting the bullet and doing a complete rebuild on it. If it is the power valve, you'll have to buy the entire kit anyway.

just asking... when was the last time you did a full tune up? going by the car in your avatar you should be getting better then that...

when i first picked up my yj 4.0 5 speed. I was getting 9mpg... YES 9 and the truck was BONE STOCK.... I thought i had made a horrible mistake. Did a quick general vehicle inspection... the fuel filter was EXTREMELY difficult to blow through (means plugged), couldnt see a flash light through the air filter, cap and rotor had slight corrosion on contacts. I replaced everything basically, fuel filter, air filter, cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs. I then threw in a huge bottle of injector cleaner... after a fresh tank of fuel through it, I consistently get 16mpg around town and 19-20 on the freeway.

Haven't done a full tune up yet. I just got it from my dad. I only had a couple days with it and now I won't be back to it for three weeks. But I will definitely be doing that when I'm back! I'll post the results.
