Gear Dilema

I got a guy a i work who thinks that on a 4x4 the axles are geared differently in order to work properly. Now we know what would happen if they were in fact geared differently there would be binding and it would thrash the t-case and what ever else u-joints and all that. He don't believe me and thinks that since I have all sorts of stuff done to my jeep the axle tags say 3.07 because I made it that way. So my question is does any one know in writing somewhere I can show him he is dead wrong so he will shut up. I can't find it, but maybe there is a manual or something somewhere.

I believe this is true, say 4.10 Rear and 4.09 Front. Or vise-versa. I can't remember.

They can have miniscule differences, it depends on the axle.

For example for 4.10's

Dana 30 have 41 tooth ring and 10 tooth pinion = 4.10

Dana 44 have 45 tooth ring and 11 tooth pinion = 4.09

If you have a Rubi, you've got 44's front and rear so they are equal. I don't know the numbers on a 35.

I can see the miniscule difference thing but you can not have to totally different gears. having 4.10 gears and 4.09 is almost the same one takes 4.10 to make the tires rotate once the other takes 4.09. I can understand that being fine but to have to totaly different gear ratio's wouldn't work one set would rotate the tires sooner causing bining or skipping until something gives.

Ya I had a 97 sport 5 spd, rear went out, and the shop put the wrong rear (dana 35 but wrong gears) in....man I have never had so many issues with one car. U joints kept popping, rear keep blowing out, finally the transfer case and transmission went out and I sold it. Gears need to be the same or very very close.

If his den-al-lee.. oh wait.. Tahoe/Yukon... is 4wd.. have him call the GMC dealer and ask them what gears he would have front and rear.. that should end it right there. Other wise just tell him it has to do with the muffler bearings....
