Yes but a few questions....

What tire size are you running?
What axles?
What motor/trans?
Are you installing or a shop?
Gear swaps are not something a novice or someone without the correct tools should tackle.

You have the right ratio for the tires/engine/trans picked.

Problem is you have a Stock D30/D35....lowest you can go/get is 4.88's.

Just because he is a "jeep" guy doesn't mean he can correctly set up gears. I've be wrenching in a garage since birth/ wyotech cetified...I don't do gears. I can but don't.

What draws me too suggesting you have a shop do it is then the parts can be ordered from the shop and they will warrenty them...otherwise your on your own.
Also....How "jeep" is this buddy or aquaintance if he doesn't know you will need new axles to run 5.38's??

Whole different apple in the bucket between TJ and CJ Tosh.

CJ's had a factory D44 that is a bolt in...only "bolt" in. Other than that welding perches will have to be done. brake lines etc.

Dana 60's were put in a wide variety of trucks for ford, chevy, and Dodge.. To my knowledge The D44 can be found in jeeps, dodge trucks, and the international scout II..

These are the axles typically used in a CJ Rear Axle Swap
Heavy-Duty AMC 20 from a Wagoneer 1980-1986
Dana 44 from a Grand Wagoneer 1987-1991
Dana 44 from a Scout II
Dana 60 from a variety of trucks
Chevy 14 bolt
Ford 9"
Ford 8.8" from an explorer with disc brakes

with your axle's 4.88 is smallest you can go, but the rear dana 35 does not like big tires and low gears.

Look into wagoneer dana 44's perhaps. .mid 80s models as I recall. but the bigger axles would be best.

What is your rear axle, a D35 or D44?

Do yourself a favor and don't invest into that axle.. If you offroad your jeep that d35's life span will be on borrowed time.. The D44 or F8.8 are two very common swaps I would look hard into then regear with that.. No point in investing into that POS D35

what do you have now?

With 37's you should want a 1 ton. GM 14 bolt shaved. The diff hangs low and turns those 37's into 35's. Dana 60 up front with high steer and linked all the way around. That's my cj plans...hehe.

I have D44 front with chromolly shafts and locked that I wanna chunk for a 1 ton. Get more money out of a useful axle verses busted.
