going to buy a jeep need advice

I intend on buying a jeep within about a month and I need some advice from some seasoned jeep owners. My budget is putting me in the circa 1988 - 1995 vinatge so that is what I am going to have to work with I intend on buying a 4.2L automatic used. Here are my questions

1.What year they started putting fuel injection in them as opposed to carburators?

2. Is there a particular year to stay away from?

3. Is mileage a real issue with modern Jeeps? Should I flench when I am looking at a Jeep with 165k miles on it? (note: I am going to be putting a lot of miles on it myself I have a 45 mile one way commute)

I belive 92 is the first year of Fuel injected. and a 45 mile comute yike thats sums up to be about 4 or 5 gallons a day. I dont have a jeep yet but thats what i have heard on this forum. Matt

1. They started using fuel injection, and switched to the 4.0L (from the 4.2L) for the 1991 year model. Little extra tidbit, 1991 is the only year that they offered the half cage (slanted bars behind the driver's hoop) and the fuel injected I-6.
2. I don't think that there were any years (after 91) to stay away from, and if you are getting an automatic, I don't think you have to worry at all.
3. If well maintained (which is hard to tell on a vehicle that you don' own), the I-6 engine will run for 250K miles or more without major work. But if it hasn't been well maintained, then you may run into issues far before that. You will get somewhere around13-17 mpg for your commute, and running the highways are usually good for older Jeeps, at least mine always ran better after a jaunt down the road at 70mph+.

Good luck with your search!

What if?

What if I could make you one heck of a deal on a new 2005 or 2006 Jeep Wrangler...

Have you ever been to Texas?

It would make one heck of a RoadTrip!

I'd go for the 4.0 if I were in the market. It just seems to be a better engine than the 4.2. Look for something from 92-95. I can't comment of the auto tranny. Never driven one, but I hear good things. I'm thinking of making my next Jeep an automatic. The stick is fun, but the auto seems to have lots of advantages.
