Goodbye WF, hello Commifornia

Well, I just found out that I can't take my jeep to Califor...er Commifornia thanks to it only being "49 state" compliant.

What does that mean? Well, thanks to the strict emissions laws of that "1 state" I cannot register my jeep there. So, my trusty steed will not be accompanying me on my move to the Golden state. Golden state my A$$!

hmpff...

Can't you get a 50-state compliant catalytic converter? that's the only difference, right?

You should be able to get it here with some modifications. Check with California DMV!

I thought it was a matter of paying them more money and passing a smog test. I'm probably wrong, though.

you most likely cannot bring any firearms that most other States allow either, still have no idea why anybody would move there as people are flocking away to other States where they are not taxed to death..... best of luck with your move.....

Unless you have modified any pollution control equipment or exhaust, virtually every vehicle manufactured in the US in the last 20 years will be DMV allowed in CA. You will need to pass their smog test though so if your vehicle is not up to snuff you will have to get it repaired and retested to register (lived in CA for 25 years and went through this on an older Jeep Cherokee that ended up having a bad O2 sensor)

I don't know about the OP, but there are a number of military bases in California. Might be the cause of a move... though, with military there are loopholes about having to register your vehicle in that state.

Yea, the rule does not apply to Military members(not me). Or people who inherited a 49state vehicle.

If it passes SMOG here you should be OK.

Before Buying a Vehicle From Out of State - Be Sure You Can Register It in California FFVR 29
Quote:
Does this Apply to Someone Moving to California?
If you are moving to California from another state, you may register a new 49-State vehicle if it was first registered by you in your home state, or for military personnel, in the last state of your military service. When applying for vehicle registration in California, you must provide evidence that the vehicle was registered.
California uses the term "new" to mean "new to the state" not "zero mileage".

You WILL be able to register the vehicle as long as NONE of the 49-state pollution controls have been modified. That means no aftermarket air cleaners, snorkels, catalytic converters, fuel tanks, etc. - and they WILL open the hood and inspect that stuff. You need to have no check engine lights or stored trouble codes when you take it in for testing, and you need to pass the test which is actually easier for a 49-state vehicle because the limits are higher.

Most important, get it tested and registered within 10 days. That is all the time you have, or the amount you might be forced to spend getting the vehicle to pass emissions testing goes from $250 to "no limit", plus you can be issued a citation and your vehicle can be towed as unregistered on the 11th day.

Once you have passed the test, each mod you make that could effect emissions must have an exemption certification number, and you must retain the paperwork to show the tester next time you take the smog test.

Better yet don't come here, you will probably will want to leave as soon as u pay the 1000$ or so fees to get your car registered here. Then, once you get your first pay check, then get refuse for walfare, because you are over taxed and have nothing left on your pay check, then you cant afford the gas to leave to go back home. You will need to pawn everything off so then u can afford the gas to go back home!.. Not to mentioned, with the increasing amount of crime, you will find out the the criminals have more rights then you do, so when they come to take your tv away and you dont help them and they hurt their backs from stealing it from you. Then, they will take you to court for a personal injury suit against you. After they have won in court, you will not have a nickel to your name, then you will be living on the street pan handling. Better you stay home, much safer!!!

Yes you can bring your 49 State vehicle here. Make very sure that your 49 state smog is installed. You also need to check to make sure you do the registration in the allotted time.

This State has a lot of problems but for a jeeper it's got a lot going for it too. We get to four wheel in mountains, deserts and coastal regions.

Where are you moving too in Ca?

You can also bring your guns etc but that is another discussion.

We may have some draconian laws here, but the State of California cannot force you to sell your 49-state vehicle and buy a 50-state vehicle when you move into California. A 49-state vehicle can be brought into California when you move here from another state, as long as the vehicle still meets the 49-state emissions standards and has no aftermarket modifications.

Make sure you understand the smog laws before you move.

The only issue to the 49 state rule is if you bring a BRAND NEW car into CA then it must have the CA smog parts, otherwise as long as it passes the 49 state smog testing your fine. I know I wnet to CA DMV because I was goint to buy an out of state jeep.

You guys laugh, but I got passed on the freeway the other day by a red Prius with a JEEP emblem under the Prius emblem.

I laughed like hell and didn't wave because I wasn't in my Jeep, either.

Register it in South Dakota. Apparently there's a way to do that without living there. Google it and problem solved.

I was in WA, and I am here to tell you, shorts, and t-shirts all year ain't bad. When we go off road, most guys just bring a cot. Kinda light on mud, but lots of rocks, and sand. Plus most trades pay wayyy more. So gotta pick your poison. I don't miss my snow chains at all.
