Got rear-ended - what to look for?

So I'm driving to work, stop for the car in front of me turning right and then "BAM!"

I get out to check the damage, looks like he hit my trailer hitch. His bumper and plate have a nice hitch-shaped dent. Couldn't see much damage on mine at the time. It was the car behind him that rear-ended him and then subsequently me.

Is there anything in particular I should look out for? This is my first vehicle that is not unibody so i'm imagining that a direct blow to the frame light that *could* mean that some suspension bracketry might have gotten f***ed.

It's entirely possible that it wasn't all that bad. I've been in rear-enders that have felt a lot worse.

pics... is your hitch bent? Look at the frame where the mounting points are for the hitch itself.

X2 on pics. It's prob fine though, will your insurance cover you taking it in and getting the frame checked?

To be honest, looks pretty normal.

And I'm not sure insurance will cover the cost of getting the frame checked.

Looks ok but looks can be deceiving. What hit you exactly?

Ok, well a car like that has a plastic/ foam bumper, and is unibody. You should be fine

The car definitely didnt hit you too hard because im guessing it just rolled into you, and with a plastic bumper, im guessing your good. Definitely make sure your hitch is okay though.

How hard? Any other damage like the spare tire or tailgate area cracked or anything like that?

funny story:
I was driving a F150 across I-70 in Colorado, stopped by an accident that has a lane closed down. Everyone in front of me is stopped and there is a state patrol in the closed down lane right beside me. I watch this little honda civic come flying up and I am thinking man that guy isn't going to stop. I hear a second or so of skidding and feel him drive under the back of the truck. Knocked my tomtom off the windshield. I get out and see a battery laying up by the front tire. Go to the back and see a smashed up windshield near the rear bumper and hood that has been torn up. The state patrol officer gets out asks if I am ok. I let him know that I was ok little sore but to be expected. We check on the guy in the car behind me and see what he was doing. He is still shaken up and sitting in his car. Ended up with me driving off only to have a scratched up bumper, bent exhaust, and a check engine light that showed up a day later (air cleaner box cover came undone in the accident lol). I drove away and had no problems what so ever with it.

So if it was a good hard hit, check to make sure it didn't knock anything loose in the jeep lol.

Haha you got away pretty easy then. Now that i've checked it over, I think I got away with maybe a little paint scuff on the hitch receiver, everything's still solid

Thanks for all your replies.

Accidents are always scary no matter what because you never know who you're dealing with. Luckily everyone at my particular scene was pretty laid back, we exchanged info at a nearby parking lot and nobody even filed a police report because the damages were so minimal.
However, I wasn't so lucky another time. This one lady at the grocery store parking lot backed into me and scraped up the back corner of my Mazda. We were both backing up at the almost the same time, I pull out a bit and then I see her starting to pull out at well, I slam the brakes, I lay on the horn but she keeps going until she inevitably scrapes into me. She storms out of the car, gives me sh**, and then I explain that I was backing out first, etc... Eventually she gives in and starts to find her papers, while mumbling curse words. At this point I decide it isn't worth the hassle over an already scraped up bumper cover, so I tell her not to worry about it - I just wanted her to know it was her doing.

Get a body shop to check the Frame, do not trust the "Ole Eye-ball". A frame out of alignment can cause big problems

VERY, glad to hear there was no PI's.

I replaced my stock bumpers with "Rampage Recovery Bumpers" front & Rear, both made of 3/16" steel!

I feel like I'm in a Tank now

It was parked on a corner of a street corner. The other vehicle slid on black ice coming down a hill and hit my 06 wrangler square on the bumper. It was shoved forward at least 3ft. The bumper is bent almost to the cross member. What should I be looking for?
