Has anyone else done something this stupid?

Ok, well today we went out for a drive in my new 1978 CJ5 and I forgot to latch the hood... long story short, the hood flew open at 50 mph on a back country road. The hood hit the windshield real hard and got dented and chipped off a good amount of paint. Its one of those things that is all my doing and was such a stupid mistake... anyone else have any of these experiences to make me not feel like such an idiot?

I did that in my 06 TJ. But I was observant enough to see the extra movement in the hood in time to stop and latch it.

So you're pretty special...

Passed a guy in an early Bronco parked on the side of the road with his hood propped up against the windshield while I was driving an old Kenworth cabover.
I didn't think much of it till I was right on him, I laid on the horn and the guy popped out from under the hood a split second before the wind of my passing slammed the hood hard enough to buckle it in the middle.
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, people make mistakes all the time, as long as you learn and no one gets hurt, it's good.

my old roommate failed to latch my hood one time and it flew open going about 60. it felt like opening a parachute. the jeep veered hard left, themn right and i ended up in the median. Thank God no other cars were beside me. when it first came up and the jeep veered it swung me so hard that my head came out and blew my hat off (no doors). now im sporting a totaly half assed bondo job on my hood where "he fixed it for me"

not in my jeep, but in my old blazer........it was closed, but the safety latch failed.

cracked the windshield, cracked the cowl, bent the hood, dented the roof, broke the hinges.

haha....i suppose so. i won't go into all the other stories; let's just say there were only three original or unrepaired body panels on that entire truck.

Saw a guy at the drag strip in a 98 Cobra have his hood fly up as he was passing the finish line. He had been showing the car, then went to race and didn't shut the hood all the way. It was sad too, it was a damn nice car, but it messed up the hood, windshield, roof. It was bad.

I've almost done it a few times in my YJ, but I've caught it before it flew up.

I leave my keys in the hood lock while working on my Jeep. This way I remember to close it and lock it before I can even start it up.

I didnt get my hood latched on my Tahoe once. Luckily the safety latch caught it before it came up. I almost had to change my shorts when I saw it pop up while I was driving on the highway. One of the guys from where I work has a Pontiac Sunfire covertible. One day it wouldnt start, so he grabs a jump box from work and goes to jump start it during lunch. Well, the alternator was bad so it wouldnt stay running. He decides to leave the jump box on the battery and drive it in. Well guess what? You cant close the hood with the jump box on the battery! He is driving along and the hood flies up. It ruins the hood, hood hinges, windshield, and the windshield frame needed straightened. Heres your sign. I laughed my ass off.

I had the hood latch fail on one of my past beaters, of course the hood latch was a bungee cord. I replaced the failed bungee with hood pins and had no further problems.

The cobra story reminded me of when a buddy of mine came out of turn 4 at Syracuse with the hood wrapped up over the windshield in a dirt late model. Pretty funny doing a buck20 during time trials with his head hanging out of the side window. We didn't start very well in that race. The hood pin actually ripped a chunk out of the chassis tubing.

i forgot to "fully close" the hood on my 90 gmc sierra one time. merged onto the highway. it kinda opened itself. i blindly pulled over and closed it. pretty lucky i guess- didnt break anything or kill anybody.

I have locking hood latches on my tj - but because of your experience, I went out and put a small cable & lock on the hood so if it rears up, it'll only go about 8" or so. Thanks.
