Help - cannot remove driveshaft centering ball

I've got my front driveshaft disassembled, but I can't remove the centering ball and its "sleeve" from its parent part on the differential (what is that called?)

Stu's off-road suggests that it will probably fall out, but mine is seated pretty well.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Odd, once I removed the u joint (one that fits between the transfer case output and DC shaft end) completely, the centering ball easily came off. Don't want to come off patronizing, but you did remove the u joint, yes?

Yes, I had completely disassembled the driveshaft by removing all of the u-joints and taking apart the ball centering assembly as much as I could. The spring and pins fell out easily enough and I removed the seal that holds in the ball centering assembly, but the ball and the sleeve that it rides in remained very well seated in its original home (don't know the name of that part, but you can see it in the attached schematic diagram in the guy's hand). I don't have a photo of the seated ball and sleeve though.

Anyhow, I took it to a shop on Friday that said that I just needed to put a punch into the hole in the ball and crank on it real hard. I don't have a vise to hold it and could never actually get it out. Their service guy was out so they couldn't do it for me right then, but I figured that I would take it in today or tomorrow to have them do it, since I'm having no luck. Is this common? I hadn't read about anybody else having this problem.

that's a double cardan driveshaft, i've broken a few, the ball should have come off
with the cv flange, that's what the hand is holding in the pic,try spraying it with
some pb blaster and let it soak for a day then try prying it off, but be careful you
don't damage the pin that the ball is on or you will be buying a new driveshaft

Yeah, I had the "cv flange" separated from it's other half. That part separated from it's other half with no problem. Happily, my pin was in good shape. However it was the ball and it's sleeve that I couldn't extract from the CV flange. It was in there very tight and wasn't corroded at all. I took it to the gear shop where I bought my ball centering kit and ujoints. The ended up drilling it out at no charge in about 3 minutes. From there I pounded in the new ball centering kit and got the driveshaft rebuilt and installed in about 10-12 minutes. Good times!
