I do everything I can, except exhaust systems, machine work and alignments. However, I'm dying to try Jerry's alignment procedure some day.
I got burned a long time ago by a garage when I was 17 and haven't been back since (except for warranty work). I re-invest the labor savings and buy more tools.... The only thing I'm missing is a lift...maybe in a couple of years.
Now the only person I can blame for any screw ups is myself.... I prefer it that way.

You should do your own alignments also, it pretty simple.
BTW what is "jp"? |

i do what i can. i am still learning, but what i can't do my hubby does. he is a mechanic and does all of the repairs and installs on his jeeps, he hates to have other people work on his jeep.

I try to do as much as I can. It's my Jeep, if I screw it up or break it it's my problem and part learning of about my Jeep.

I have done all the service to my Jeep since I got it. Lift kit, brakes, oil, heater core etc. Like stated above, why pay someone to do what I can do in my own garage.
On a side note, I used to take my truck in for general maintenance, but that was only due to lease rules at an apt I was renting at that stated no working on vehicles.

Everything except alignments, mounting, and balancing.
I finally have a good garage, and hopefully a lift will be installed in a couple of years. It's planned for after new a new roof and siding on the house.

I do absolutely everything. No body touches my jeep but my closest friends and my dad. I have completely disassembled my jeep down to a bare frame and rebuilt it from the ground up. I did the Chevy 350/SM465 swap, Ford 8.8 install, fabricated my bumpers and tummy tuck cross-member, rebuilt the transmission and transfer case, installed ring and pinion(correctly), did all the body work, prepped and painted, and built my custom dash. I built the 3" exhaust system with a Y pipe. I've mounted and dismounted my 38's and mounted my 35's and front end alignment.

That's a good write-up on alignments. Actually, that's a cool site in general.
I've tried to adjust the toe before (on Dodge 4x4s) and never seem to get it right.

I do all my own work and family members work, everyone else gets charged. I was a tech at GM dealerships for 8 years before I switched careers. Only problem is, I have my tool box in my mothers garage and a weekend warrior box where I'm renting, so chances are where I am doing the work, the tool I need is at the other place!

I've done everything so far. Once something gets into the bottom end of the motor, or things that need special diag/equip, then it goes to the shop.

I definately believe in doing all my own wrenching and with all the write-ups now a days its pretty easy to do most of the mechanical stuff yourself. Its a good to know the ins & outs of your Jeep, especially if out on a trail and encounter any issues or breakage.

I tried to do as much as I can... changing fluids, minor steering and suspension upgrades, bushings, brakes, etc...
but for anything more than that I have to go to a professional. I like to watch!

I do everything I can, and what I can't the guys in the club help out with instruction. Like when I wrestled the front track bar for 45 mins trying to get it to line up so I could run the bolt through. As my "buddys" watched on one finally said " It will line right up if you move the steering wheel". What are friends for.

I had to fix all the body work on it and now I am putting coils and linking the suspension along with bulding a custome front stinger winch bumper

I do all my own work too, at least what can be handled in a driveway with a floorjack and stands. If I dont know how, I grab a friend or a book, or both.
I have a few connections for things that I cant handle, or dont wanna be bothered with.

I do everything that I can do. Certain things that require big/expensive tools or actually putting it on the lift gets outsourced.
Some things I have friends help with (especially the welding as I don't have one).
I don't mount or balance my tires, but I rotate them as an example.

Jeez, no wonder it was so hard. You got the order all wrong.
It's:
1. Blood
2. Cursing
3. Beer
4. I dunno, I forget...

I do as much as I can. If I can't I call a friend who knows. I can always go to the auto hobby shop on base if I need special tools or a lift. I figure that no one will do as good job on my jeep as I will!
