how to adjust brakes

Bought 97 TJ, brakes were completely apart on both sides, bought a book & got them together, now I smell burnt smell from the rear of the jeep...any ideas what it could be

Sounds like hand brake is ON or brakes are adjusted to close and always rubbing drum.

Thanks, I didn't think about the e-brake, the brakes probably need to me adjusted again
