Question How to choose the bumper that works for you

I promised myself I'd finish all of my current mod projects before I began looking at bumpers. So I finished my winch install yesterday and am ready to begin my research.

There are a TON of option out there, so I was wondering I'm looking for advice from others that have upgraded their bumpers.

What kind of things do I need to take into consideration? (other than it's capatability w/ my vehicle)

The only things I've come up w/ so far are:
1) Width - stubby, mid, full
2) Ability to attach a winch

The rest of it may just come down to "what do you want", but was wondering is there is anything else I need to consider that will help me limit my search.

thanks

Thought of another:

3) Tire carrier on rear bumper in case I go to larger tires down the road.

Weight.

For the rear...does it come with a tow hitch, or leave room for the factory one?

Are you gonna want to put lights on the front?

Good points.

For weight, I don't plan on going w/ some 2-ton beast so anything within reason will be fine. After I pick out what I want, I'll address the weight with my new springs/lift.

As for the hitch, I had thought about that but forgot.

Are you saying that some that don't have a tow hitch are large enough that they cover up the factory one? That I hadn't considered.

I'm kinda leaning towards getting one w/ a tow hitch in (cleaner look) it but I don't really have a preference one way or the other.

Back up lights for me so I can see backing out of Gluesticks driveway since there is no street lights

I'm pretty sure most of them make SOME kinda provision for tow hitches...IIRC, a few leave a cutout area for the stock tow hitch. Others come with one welded to the bumper.

Ah, just remembered! ACE has a rear bumper with a hitch that will allow the max loads (2K lbs JK, 3.5K lbs JKU) to still be towed. Doesn't have a rear tire carrier, though.

Here's a good link that'll at least give you some photos to look at, and some general, if a little outdated, info...

Front BUMPER comparison

Agreed. The ability to install some lights into the rear fender would be a welcomed option.

So you're saying some bumpers that come w/ a tow hitch have a decreased towing capacity?

Actually, I'm not sure. I just know that ACE claims theirs does...which leads me to believe that perhaps there are some out there that don't.

Although, applying logic to Jeep aftermarket parts is probably foolish, at best.

What would Spock do?

In regards to a rear bumper with or without a hitch: any pros cons that I may not realize?

..............
I ran out and purchased Rampage Recovery Bumpers F&R, too soon. Love the front & works with my WARN M8000 winch perfectly

Upgraded to larger tires and wheels, and boy, what a surprise! When lifting the "new" spare, I realized how much weight I had sitting on the tail-gate (could not be good over time) For me it was an easy personal decision to sell my new rear bumper and order one with a swing-out tire carrier!

For me the LoD rear was the choice: beefy swing-out tire carrier, trailer hitch and cut-outs for lights. Additionally, if you call them they can supply a "gloss-black finish" to match other Mod's on your Jeep. Due to high demand, there is at least a 3-week wait to get their bumpers, but quality takes time

Most of the ones that have a built in hitch receiver are for accessories only and are not tow rated.

Ah, glad I asked. I have a jetski to pull so I'll mark in-bumper hitch off my list. Thanks!
