How to make a bad day worse...

So I haven't written on the board for a while.. mostly just read. I love that you peeps are so knowledgeable and I don't ever have to post to get your helps fixing things. Search ftw!

But, I feel the need to vent in a place where only you would understand.

After a very loud heated argument with my husband, I've now forcefully commandeered my 02 TJ back for my horrific 52 miles each way commute to work every day. After taking my 13 mpg brick with wheels (not complaining.. I love my Jeep. Perhaps more than I love my husband... lol) I decided I want to take the top off (of the Jeep...) and really enjoy the open road as it's intended...

And then it began.. couldn't get the nuts off the bolts on the doors. Half of a can of WD-40 later and the bolts were so rusted, they snapped at the nut. Well, at least it'll make the doors easier to get off next time? Long story short, 3 hours and two swollen wrists later, the top is still on, and I now have 4 out of 6 bolts to the hard top, stripped and rusted into one solid piece. And I'm now covered in WD-40.

So what now? Any ideas on how to fix this? Do I buy new bolts and bring it to a shop to have the rusted ones snapped off? Anyone else run into this?

Thanks for listening!

I had a very hard time with my doors. I took some advice from another forum to shoot the hinges with wd40 everyday until they come off... needless to say a week later my patience wore out. Me and my brother tried taking the doors off physically (both of us trying to pull the door up from the bottom) - unsuccessful. I ended up undoing the torx bolts on the doors where the hinges are (this was a bit frustrating as well - but not as bad). then i took a rubber mallet and forced the hinges off. Filed them down a little. Never had a problem again.

As for the hardtop torx, I guess I am spoiled, they came off first try.

Try tightening them if you can
then loosen
PB plaster is better for breaking rust
dont worry ,just break them
and buy some more at the hardware store
not torx

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

Terror, it seems like if it moves, it rusts on my Jeep. Even the back door is hard to move. This is what I get for letting my husband drive it. I've already had the hood repainted from bubbling rust, the gasket on the windshield is rusting around the top, the door handles and back windshield hinge have all been replaced because of rusting. Don't get me started on the grill. lol.

wd40 isn't doing much for penetrating the rust. the pb blaster mentioned above is good, as is Kroil, what i prefer. you might still break them, but then you can just replace them with good stainless stuff.

Go to auto parts store and buy an ease out or drill and tap your bolt holes! I had to drill and tap 24 on my yj...

lol. dork.

Turns out apparently they have to be "Sanded off." Fun times...

But, I have new stainless steel (Thanks Sinister!) bolts now to replace them. Thank you very much for the suggestions.

The only solution to that problem is to move. Too much salt.

A 50/50 mix of ATF & Acetone is the best penetrant I know of. It will work as good or better than PB Blaster and will be cheaper due to the bulk amount.

I got fix for your back door on your jeep. The hinges do this on every tj, its because the hinges are not made very well there are two differant types of metal used in the construction and they bind very easy. Bye new hinges from one of the online 4 wheel shops that are stainless it will solve your problem with that.

Haha yeah.

Ageless, the salt here is definitely horrible. I just noticed the other day that the windshield gasket is failing now too.. yet another patch of rust. Oh.. and the grill... bug, rocks.. RUST.

Gabby, Are the hinges hard to replace?
