I got the Smog Check blues...

My Jeep failed the smog test TWICE! Both times, it failed the 15 mph test - 688 on 8/31 - 644 on 9/4 - maximum allowed is 512. My next step will be to have the exhaust manifold checked, and go over the engine and maybe the Cat.

My K&N/AEM Intake/Filter combo has a CARB # and is clean.
I changed the oil on 9/1 (Full Synthetic w/K&N oil filter).
I used 'EMISSIONS PASS' as prescribed with Chevron gas.
Rear tires aired up to 35 p.s.i. (33" w/4.10 gears).

I hope this gets resolved before I end up driving around on expired tags.

My 94 YJ would never pass emissions with a after market cat. I bought a factory cat through a wholesale mopar parts dealer and passed the emission test with out any problems. Oxygen sensors can also fail and not cause the check engine light to come on.

I am pretty sure my O2 sensors have failed - due to the high NO #s. I need to have the computer scanned by an OBD2 machine in order to see which ones need replacing.

A word of advice if your O2 sensors need to be replaced: 1. replace all of them at once and not one at a time, 2. also you might not like paying dealership pricing but go factory O2 sensors or you will more problems then you want. Also some people will tell you that CATs never go bad, but they can go bad and one cause for some is really really long idle periods.

I ran the OBD2 Scan, and no errors turned up. Next on the agenda;

1. Replace the gas cap
2. Clean the throttle body
3. Tune up using OEM-level plugs
4. Full tank of Chevron 87 Octane Fuel
5. Check the battery (Gel-type) for a full charge.
6. Cross my fingers
