It's when you take a 4.0L add a 4.2L crank and different pistons and rods, you end up with an engine that is anywhere from 4.2-4.9L and puts out alot more power. There are bigger injectors, map change, etc but it's pretty straight forward provided you planned it correctly. They are also available over the counter in long or short block from 4 or 5 different manufacturers.

Thank you rich. I was mad and I couldnt type straight! You guys knew what I meant. I had it all planned to the T and thats what makes me angry. It wasnt from lack of plans. Ya see, Im doing this for a buddy but at the same time its for a class at college. We have to rebuild a motor. I bought everything and was ready for reassembly when I found that the main bearings from the 4.2L for the top of the engine do not fit in the block because the notch is offset. Ok, that kinda sucks but what can I do. So I call Summit and speak with a rep about which ones to order. Finally he gets me a part number and lets me know they will work for me. I order the appropriate .010" bearing since the crank has been ground. Mind you my time to put this back together for my class is now slim. I recieve the bearings yesterday an hour after I get out of class. That left me with absolutley nothing to do while I was in class. At this point I was a little angry because they came late (7pm!). Then right before class had ended my teacher told me that I had to finish by Thursday of this week or he will just give me a grade for what I have (which is a stripped and bored block). Thats like a D, so I knew Id have to work fast today since I finally got my new bearings. Then I go to put them in and whatdya know, they dont F'IN WORK!! The nimrod working at summit sent me bearing for a 4.0L up to the year 1990 which still had the offset notch in the block for the mains. I specifically told him it was for a 94' engine and I needed them quickly because I was on a time crunch. I was about to snap the block over my knee at this point (granted trying that would really hurt but you get the idea). Summit used to be my favorite because they ship quick and they have good prices but this deffinatley lost them a few ranks in my book. Now I have ordered ANOTHER set of bearings from a local engine shop and they are going to be here tomorrow. To top it all off that teacher is only in the shop until about 4 pm and I have class before then, further limiting my one full day to work on it. I dont even get Thursday now because my dad needs me to come home. Sorry for the massive rant but I have dumped about $800 dollars into building this (which is actually very cheap for a stroker) and it makes me angry when all my time and money are held up by one thing (which the crank is the second thing to go in the engine so I cant do anything else without those bearings). At this point its a bored block with cam bearings and a cam. I'll update tomorrow and throw pics up early next week.

wow, that sucks. but its not the strokers fault. hey, let me know the differences in bearings, cuz i'll be in the same spot soon. i've got a block from an 89 or so xj. i also have a complete engine w/ accessories, wiring, and ecu from a 95 i'm picking up, but the xj block is machined .030 already.

What pistons you running. I plan on running 4.2 crank, 4.0 rods and custom pistons that have good qaunch but will still alow me to run low grade gas with no ping.

He wants to maintain the 4.0 rods Id guess because it is possible to build a stroker up to 4.9L when they are used in combination with custom pistons. They produce about 270-280 horse power too! I jsut took the easy, and cheaper way out by sticking with 4.2L rods but its still gonna be a 4.7L when Im done I believe. About 250hp and estimated 325ft/lbs of torque, all at about 2000rpm. Maybe I can snap some pics tomorrow for you guys and show ya what Im workin with.

Why are you forking out the 800 bucks to build a friend's motor for him?? Sounds like a bad deal for you.

Haha, he does actually have a decent lookign sister who liked me all through high school but thats not the reason. Dont worry, Im not paying for all of it. I just have to fork up front for it but he is paying back $500 for the parts and another $1500 for the engine itself. He had a 4.2L and it was time he got some fuel injection because it jsut wasnt cutting it on hills.

Haha, yea ya know I gotta keep em entertained. I am no longer angry though! I recieved the correct bearings finally and now I have the crank and cam in. But my teacher had to leave early today so thats all I got to do. I was shorted 2 plugs on my freeze plug kit but I will get 2 more from the guy so Im not worried. Also, my teach said I can work on it over finals week so I was excited about that. Hopefully I can get the long block assembly together and just do all the accessories at home. Also, I got a high volume oil pump and jsut for kicks I put it on and checked for clearence on the oil pan. Looks like I may have to do some clearencing with the large persuasion tool
