Hey, Tone here, and I am really interested in a 2002 Wrangler X at a local dealer. It has 76k miles on it, and it looks very clean underneath, and it has some minor paint issues on the body. It also has some surface rust on the passenger door handle. The dealer is asking $12,000 for it. Is that way too much? Oh, I forgot to mention, it is the I-6 and it's an automatic with a hard top(looks brand new). I test drove it, and it rode really well and I LOVED my '97 except for the 4 banger engine. Damn thing was so slow! What do you think?
a 2002, with only 76.000 on the clock....with rust?
first question: rust?
where did THAT come from? was it used extensively in a salty area? Drove into the ocean? Drove all winter/s on salt roads?
and then ponder...if you can see a little rust on that door, what about the rust you cant see?.....
that things only been alive a few years...it shouldnt have ANY rust on it, ANYwhere. period. Because if it does, theres more-and probably in places you cant reach....how would you feel in, o, say 5 years when the frame suddenly folds because rust ate it away from the inside?....
check for fresh black paint underneath, and if theres ANY..walk away....and walk away happy.
plan on problems.
where I come from, thats considered a pre-rustbucket.
Thanks Ed. The ONLY rust on it is on the door handles actually, but I will check over it more carefully for new paint and see if I can find rust other places. It's only 3 years old, and it seems weird to have rust already. Like you said, it shouldn't have any. And the fender flares are as faded as they are going to get. I was told it was driven it's entire life on the highway, which is a good thing as far as I know. Better than 76k miles of off roading, lol. It looks great though, minus the rusty door handles. I am going to go tinker with it all day tomorrow and drive the salesman insane! Maybe he'll take the price down to get rud of me, and the Jeep. =) Here's for hopin'.
Yeah, definitely pay attention to those rust spots. It they are only on the door handles then I wouldn't worry about it too much as those can get scratched up and start rusting pretty easily.
A quick KBB estimate for that year/model/mileage in your area shows a retail of around 13 and Private sale of around 9500. So something in the neighborhood of 10500 wouldn't be too bad as long as everything else checks out. The mileage is a little high however.

Um...yeah. I checked it out more thoroughly, and I found out some crap. The exhaust manifold was replaced at some point. It is leaking oil. And the cd player doesn't work. The salesman said he'd straighten all that out, but I think I am going to get my deposit back and look for something in better shape for 12grand. Wow.
I bought a 01 sport with 36k on it for 10,000 the only thing wrong i could find was the center console was broken which the dealer threw in a new one. they even had the previous owners name in the owner manual and i called him to see if he had any problems and he said no he just wanted a 05
