I am getting ready to fabricate myself up a bumper set, I want to see what you guys have done and hear some why's and some how's.

Easy, just steal my design and attach a rolled tube the angle off of the front top if you wish. While i like the look of the rectangular tubing I used, if you are going to be using round tube I'd make the bumper out of round tube as well.... Consistency I like. My top mounting plate is built to fit a winch and that can be easily done with round tubes as well. I hope you're a welder.

Off topic a bit... but I don't run around town with my shackles on front/rear for fear of them being stolen... though I would like to.... on the trails is a different story...

So far, the front bumper holds up well... hit a bolder that I had to push... scuffed the pass side a bit...

I just put on the HighRock 4x4 bumpers from Besttop. Pics are a little ways on the page below if you want to check them out for Ideas.

I will say that I foudn it hard to believe that they put light mounts on the grille but did not drill it so you can run wires through it. When I contacted them to ask about it they told me to use electrical tape or zip ties to secure my wires to guard. WTF??

So I will most likely drill them out, paint the bare metal of the holes, run my wires and then seal the hoels up as much possible with black silicone.

So make sure you remember to leave spaces for things like light wires and if you do a back bumper make a place to accomadate the wires for your trailer lights.

well I had this plate of 3/8ths. Or maybe 1/2. Not sure.

So I added the 30* bend, burned on top pieces with bolt holes, and capped the ends.

I kinda liked it, but it didn't look right.

Then I decided I really should have made it a winch mount, but that meant pushing it out for room for the plate.
I bought the plate... didn't make that, found a cheap used one.
So I decided to angle it, instead of the flat front.
Well that put the bottom of the frame rail below the bumper.
So I added another 1" long strip of steel to it, tapered again, butted a small piece of angle iron to the inside of it all, then notched and folded up the bottom bolt hole on the front of the frame.

Didn't get good pics while I was reworking it, but here's how it ended up.

rear bumper is just a bumper and reciever mount.
front bumper is made from 2x4 1/4" thick box steel. winch plate made from 1/4" plate and end caps made from 1/4" plate as well...
with that said... don't pull out in front of me... you won't like it.
it now has a 12k atlas winch on it..... (got too good of a deal to pass up)

My front. 1/4" wall steel, grade 8 bolts, bolt holes thru bumper are sleved. I welded 1/4" angle bracklets that i made to the frame to add ridgidity. I don't like relying on the capured frame nuts too much.

Rear, is 1/4" wall as well. both front and rear d ring mounts are welded front and rear thru the bumpers as well. Custom mounting that bolts thru the top and bottom of the upgraded rear frame as well.

Best mounted pic that I have.... LOL. I built them myself and have fully tested both of them with hard hits and some tough recovery's. They never flinched. :)

Built this one 4 yrs ago!

Built this one about 3 years ago

Built the back bumper for the TJ

Then built a swing-out for the spare. Also replaced front and rear differentials with Detroit tru-tracs after reading Jerry Bransford's recommendations! Glad I did it!
