If not Wrangler

If not Wrangler what would you drive? I really like Land Rover Defender look and abilities I saw on TV or web, I wish we could buy them in US. Not clear why can't we? For sure I like Mercedes G but that is tons of $. Toyota FJ is ugly and discontinued next year, same possibly will happen with Nissan Xterra based on latest news. Hummer is gone and is too big to my needs.

What else? All other SUV's is just soccer mom cars to my view Look what they did with Nissan Pathfinder, FWD based with CVT as a tranny, is it for real?

I would probably buy another Toyota Tacoma if I didn't have my jeep. Also I think wranglers are becoming popular with soccer moms too, I see plenty of them around my area.

If I didn't have my Jeep, I'd probably try to talk my dad into selling me the old half cab Scout he has sitting down by his shop.

Probably a crew cab Tacoma. I have a 99 standard cab 4x4 that has been an absolute tank. Other than wear/maintenance items, all I've ever done to it is replace the starter.

I tried to talk my wife into a new 4 door as a replacement, but she loves the 2 door so much she preferred keeping it to a new truck.

Breitling... The older gen small Land Rover failed US crash testing. They sold them here for a couple years. I think the last year was like 97. When airbags became mandatory and the Defender couldn't pass the updated side impact test, they stopped selling them here.

First, the Jeep is my wife's DD. She came real, real close to buying a Dart instead of the Jeep. I mentioned to her that they seemed to be having a lot of first year growing pains from things I read on a Dart forum. That got her to thinking and the Jeep won out.

It gets about the same 18 mpg as a DD as her old GT Cruiser.

I read somewhere on-line in the last day or so that the Defender will not be replaced - Google-fu: It's true!

Sort of a moot point as they're not sold in NA new but it will inflate used Defender prices for those who import them (black market or otherwise).

G-Wagens are nice, but as mentioned, way too pricey. NA versions seem to invariably be luxo-speed barges. There is a Professional version available to government agencies, and Edition Pur model, which is the civilian version of the Professional. I'm not sure if it's avail in NA, but if I did win the lottery and was getting a G-Wagen, that's the one I'd want.

If not a wrangler it would have to be a XJ, if not a Jeep then I would take a older 4 Runner with a solid front axle.

Sounds like you are talking about "new" jeeps.
IMO all the 4x4s are being made less 4x4 but more for CEO/ grandmas to park on curbs.. Look at the new Cherokee, you cant even find a decent off road test video, gravel at best... XJ beats it in every way.

Pretty much Tacoma is the only one I see that's getting better and better...

CJ> = YJ >= TJ >>>> JK.

Assuming it must be a new vehicle, the SWB Land Cruiser J70 which is still in production here is good value and good performance.

It's actually more expensive than a Wrangler JK though, which is one reason why I didn't buy it in the first place.

Can you get that with a Diesel?

Plain ol 2 door 4x4 8 foot bed Nissan pickup for me, if they didn't have Wranglers of course.

The only affordable mid-sized pickup left in the USA.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Toyota Tacoma 4x4 blah blah...

You can buy a brand new 2014 Nissan for less than a used 2009 4x4 Toyota pickup with the same options.

I think you need to get a Titan if you want 8' bed. Frontier is 6', guess you could use that tube bed extender that lays on tailgate to cheat a little. Great trucks, but looking way dated. Nissan needs to shorten the life cycle of the Frontier and Titan (I have a crew cab Titan, and it has been solid).

Not in the short wheelbase version, but in the pick-up version, yes.

Both pick-up and SWB are great. But I would really miss the Wrangler 4x4 system, the brake differential is good sometimes in the dunes. The J70 has a limited slip differential just in the rear. I've driven with one J70 and he kept up with two JKs in very difficult terrain (crossing lots of 5-10 meter sharp dunes) at night. The only problem was his bald tires, we watched him slide sideways down a sandy mountain because of that, he almost tipped.
