Installing new aux lighting

can anyone point me to a good write-up (noob friendly) on how to go about doing this? i have never done anything that involved any electrical components on my jeep and would like to save the $200 labor my local mechanic wants to charge me my ultimate goal is to install some kc hilites by my windshield. thanks!

nice photoshop skills nicolas-eric!

the confusion for me is, other than connecting the light to the batteries (duh) and connecting them to the on/off switch i will be installing in my cab, what else needs to be connected? i see something called a "relay" and it also looks like the ingnition is involved somehow!

DJ - did you buy just the lights? No harness? If so, I'd suggest getting a light harness from KC Lites or someone.

if the aux light switch + cable is connected to ignition + (the fast + cable at the fuse box behind the glove box) the light will turn off if you turn off the ignition.

you can do the wiring by yourself. a relay costs about 5$, a switch about 5$ and some cables and connectors also cost 5$.

when you never did such an electrical installation before i would buy the expensive KC harness. it comes with a good manual and you cant do any mistakes with that.

Yes - I bought some Kc's #238(?) and it came with the harness and everything needed. I got them off eBay for less than $100 shipped.

wiring up my first set of hella high beams took about 2 hours. the 2nd set took 1 hour and the set of hella fog lights only took 35 minutes.
thatīs learning by doing.
before that i never heard about a relay or other electrical things...

btw. i installed all my lights switches behind the auto tranny shifter:

I have a tuffy, and making holes for those switches woulda been sloppy for me. So all my switches are in the center. I added the second bezel for 6 switches total. I do like how DUCKIT ran the cabling for the windshield lighting and likely how I'll do it once I add it to mine.

If you order the lights as a kit with the harness included it'll make for a much easier install if this is your first time installing auxiliary lighting. The kit should also come with some good directions, but check out this write up that erickpl did, it's a good reference especially if you want to run an aftermarket switch: http://www.wranglerforum.com/general...teup-6548.html
