Insurance on multiple vehicles?

Hi all,

I am shopping around for my first Jeep but it's looking like the insurance is going to make it prohibitively expensive for me

I own a 98 Ford Ranger 2wd stock standard truck, and my premiums on that are $756 per 6 months. High as all hell cause i am on an H1B visa and have no previous driving experience in the states (even though i've been driving on a full licence for 16 years).

I spoke to State Farm today and they said to insure a Jeep along with that will cost me the same again. Which will make it about $250 per month just in insurance for the 2 vehicles. Too much!

My question is... is it normal that I should pay liability on each vehicle. Aren't they insuring me as a driver for liability?? And then i pay damage etc on each vehicle?

And my next question is... should i give up the ranger and just have a Jeep? (prob rhetorical on here haha)

Cheers!

Jeep insurance is going to be more than a car or truck.

I just got a 2007 Jeep and the insurance is several dollars more than on my 2011 fully loaded Silverado.

That is an excellent question, too bad more people don't think about that. The fact is, like in the UK, the insurance companies set their own rules, and can do more or less what they like (usually with some minimum state oversight).

I would say that the reason your rates are so high is your location, college areas and cities have higher rates than rural areas and lesser populous locations.

Congratulations on obtaining an H1B visa, very cool, what area of science (what discipline of physics I should say) and will you be staying in the US after your graduate work (or prove Michio Kaku correct lol)?

Not in Michigan! We have 3 vehicles ('13 Wrangler, '13 Chrysler 200 & '10 Dodge Challenger) & the insurance on our Wrangler is the cheapest!

Yeah the insurance on the Jeep was pretty much the same (and that's a 99 TJ sport vs a stock 98 2wd ranger). It's more the liability on top of liability which kills me.

Thanks O_M_Jeep pretty stoked! took a while to get all sorted. Doing nanotechnology as a postdoc. Will see what happens. And re: insurance seems i just have to suck it up and do the best i can.

I rung Geico and they gave me a pretty similar quote so seems to be the norm in NM. Geico did offer me 15 % off or whatever. But they're tricky.. they drop your coverage in some cases by $40k without really pointing it out. Sneaky! No wonder they can afford the discounts

My NEW Jeep Wrangler insurance is cheaper then my 06 Chevy Cobalt insurance. Go figure. That's with the same coverages though. I just have liabality on the Chevy, and Full coverage for the Jeep, so that the only thing that makes the Jeep more expensive.

I pay less for my '13 Rubicon than I do for my '06 F350 4wd truck. Both have the same level of coverage.

Insurance varies greatly based on location - here, Ford Super Duty trucks are popular vehicles to steal. Wranglers, not at all.

They are insuring the vehicle, based on your ownership and risk assessment of your situation; i.e. age, residence and locale, driving history, accident record, credit history [some insurers], collective history of vehicle claims among the company's insured in a given area, etc.

+1

I have a clean driving record, good credit, $500 deductible on collision, $100 deductible on the comprehensive through USAA. Not sure if that makes a difference.

I was surprised that the Jeep was a little more than the Silverado...I guess I should do some checking with other insurance companies.

As a former Ranger owner...

I say, sell the Ranger now...while it's still running.

My '94 being towed from a remote camp at the Sierra San Pedro Martir - Vallecitos campground.

I have MetLife through my work. Full coverage on my 13jku and liability on my 98 Explorer and its 750 every 6months. Direct withdraw from my pay check every week. So much easier. One less bill to deal with.

I traded in a clean 2007 F150 Lariat, loaded for my 2011 Jeep Sahara also loaded and saw my rates drop a fair amount, wasn't huge but surprised me to see it lower on a vehicle that was 4 years newer.

If you are the only driver, then insurance on the second vehicle should be cheaper. You can only drive one at a time.

Phila is high for insurance. It's the location. When my wife and I added a third car it was about a third of the others.
