I am looking for an iPhone GPS app that is capable of importing tracks for use in leading runs, much like what is possible with a Garmin Montana. I have seen some members using there iPhone for such purposes and would love to know the name of the app your using and the maps being used, whether you like it or not and, if not, what you would buy instead.
In my search for the best GPS app, I ran across one that no one in any of the forums I monitor mentioned. It's called PathAway and was designed by people who spend a great deal of time outdoors. They have 3 levels of their app at $4.99, $29.99 and $49.99 and it appears to offer everything off-roaders would want, and more. If you have the time, please take a look at it and let me know what you think.
I was also searching around for an app to use. I used to use my Garmin eTrex Legend while out on the trails, and now that I've gotten back into off-roading, I wanted something different. I searched around quite a bit and ended up picking up Pathway. I've only had a chance to use it off-road once, but worked great, and when I got home, I exported the track as a GPX file and then imported it on my Macbook Pro with an app called GPX Viewer. Here is my track from Uwharrie. Haven't imported any routes yet, but plan to work with it some more.
Am I correct in that PathAway does not include any maps with their app? If so, what maps are you using? Do they have good quality and plenty of detail? Which version of PathAway did you buy as they have three?
I have it using web based maps now. You can select various sources Google, Terraserver-USA, OpenStreetMap.org, and several topo, FAA, and Nautical maps. You can stay online or cache them. You can import from other sources with the Express version (middle tier). It's highly customizable from what I've seen so far. I just grabbed the $4.99 version to try it out. I figured for the price of a Happy Meal, why not? I may go ahead and get the express version.
My only issue is the screen on my iPhone 5C is fairly small, and the dashboard on the app is hard to read while driving. An iPhone 6 or iPad mini might help with this.
My initial run was to track my last trip. I now want to create a route, and add waypoints for geocaches - which we like to do while out on the trails. From an accuracy standpoint, it did a great job. When I took the track and overlayed it on another map on my Macbook, it was pretty much right on. Maybe a little off in some areas with dense tree coverage, but that is a function of the iPhone not really the app.
Hope this helps.
