Is it worth the effort?

Hi all,
My 97 Wrangler has about 210,000 miles on it. My 10 year old boy says he wants it. he's been saying this for the last 2 years. Should I try to preserve it or what?

...the new 4 door sure looks sweet!

Well it has been well maintained and serviced, is not using oil or having other mechanical issues, sure, I'd save it. He's only 10... if he starts saving his allowance now, by the time he can legally drive it he can put in a new engine!

You aren't going to get diddly for it trading it in anyway!

X2.........what better way to pass on the tradition. Let him learn about Jeeps by rebuilding this one. That will probably keep him focused on a positive route, as he matures. It will also give you both some great time together, which is priceless.

Yeah, get him his own set of craftsman tools for this birthday and let him get started turning wrenches on that bad boy. You could even get him a user name and sign him up on the forum.

Ummmmmm, my bad, probably not such a good idea. We'd probably corrupt him.

I would hang onto it, and keep it in the family. I wish I would have had a hand-me-down like that

My eight year old has said that he wants my jeep when he gets his license. He has a lot of memories in it just like I do. I will do what I can to preserve it for him. Lately it has gotten more expensive. He was telling my the differences between CJ's, YJ's and TJ's this weekend. I think the jeep thing has got him too. Put yourself in your son's situation. If my dad would have handed me the keys an old CJ I would have been in heaven.

Keep it I almost got rid of mine but decided to keep it. My son is 10 months and goes out with me and loves it. I wan tot give it to him someday. HE already stand in the seat and tries to drive it he even grabs the shifter and wiggles it around while holding on to the wheel. Keep it.

this reminds me of anold alan jackson song.....

I'm grown up now
Three daughters of my own
I let them drive my old jeep
Across the pasture at our home
Maybe one day they'll reach back in their file
And pull out that old memory
And think of me and smile
And say.

It was just an old worn out jeep
Rusty old floor boards
Hot on my feet
A young girl, two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel
And he'd say
''Turn it left, and steer it right
Straighten up girl now, you're doing just fine.''
Just a little valley by the river where we'd ride
But I was high on a mountain
When Daddy let me drive.

When I told my 11 year old, "In 5 years this Jeep will be yours" his eyes got all big and he gave me a "Really?" "Wow!".

I've already had him help me switch wheels, change oil & filters, and find a steering problem. Hopefully we'll work on it together enough that he'll have a strong grasp how things work & how to fix them by the time he starts to wheel it.

I'm sure that if, at that time, he doesn't want it then the next one will.

You gotta keep it. My 7 year old already has dibs on mine. Or maybe he'll have to buy him his own. I might not want to give it up. Sell it...never.
