Is Jeep losing its soul?

Came across some pictures today of the 2011 Wrangler's interior and realized our beloved Wrangler is now a soccer mom SUV

What happened?

Oh, as soon as someone comes out with a fix to cover up the chrome, it won't be that bad... obviously the chrome touches were thought up by someone who's never driven topless in the sun.. Blinding things inside to catch the sun is never a good idea, IMO. I like being able to actually see when I drive.....

he he he, But it does look like a mini van and I would be afraid of all the electrical getting damaged by water and the sun, surely they have it well insulated?

Why, yes they are. I know of someone who is a licensee with Chrysler. He is having dificulty renewing his license because They (Jeep) are trying to distance themselves from "Low end" type endeavors. And this is a quote "We want Jeep to be the new Land Rover" How is that for a goal...

they can do that with the cherokee and the commander or even the liberty, leave the wrangler rough and ready plz, but there will always be some sucker willing to pay 35+ for it I am sure, which is why it is headed down that road

It's been headed that way since the first civilian Jeep was sold.
Every model change has gotten softer and frillier.
It's the nature of the beast, there just aren't enough hardcore Jeepers to keep them viable in the market if they can't drag in the suv crowd.

Just playing... Besides, there is no such thing as a rusty jeep, it is the original trail rating, not some stick on emblem...

And this is a quote "We want Jeep to be the new Land Rover" How is that for a goal...

That quote is one jeep should work on...the Defender series Land Rover, which is not available in the U.S., is just as bare-bones as our Wranglers used to be....my brother owns 3 Range Rovers, and I would get one of them before the new Cherokee after seeing it...and I am ALL JEEP at my house.

the defenders were bad a$$ would own one in a heartbeat, read up on tem, apprently it was too expensive to keep up with the american safety regs so they quit selling them here, dont quote me on that ha ha, anywho, jeeps have slowly becoming cars, just like americans have slowly became soft and lazy (and fat)(me included)

Personally, the inside of the new Wrangler models are unactractive to me...with all those purdy gadgets and whistles...I know times are changing and the heads at Jeep today maybe are overdosing on Lattes n mall visits but a Jeep to me is not a cross breed between american n foreign design or new age paneling all over the cabin...not that i'm beating up on foreign designs or non american "parts". What I'm saying: there's a place for all of those in other vehicles. Manufacturers please, get all of that plastic out of those Jeep Wranglers! Please

Standard Chrysler interior. Looks just like the PT Cruiser to me. They're making them cheap and selling them for large!

beat me to it.

Chrysler has a problem with this. All their interiors are apparently designed by one guy, who can't come up with new ideas.

That's my biggest complaint with the Viper - its an 80k+ race car with a dodge truck stereo/interior.

True... The next thing will be "To offer different items too make it LOOK LIKE an OLDER JEEP". MY 2010 is as close as I could get to one of the older jeeps(color included)... This is my 4th Jeep, so I've been around awhile.

I think the good people at Chrysler need to take notice of this...either make a real JEEP or sell the line to someone who will.

Don't get me wrong, I am NOT hating on JK's, but the exterior is looking more like an H2, which was IMHO a poor Jeep knockoff...How'd that work out for Hummer, hmmmm? See anymore H-anythings being made now?

If you have such a long-standing product with a cult following such as this, why try and change it to look like all the other generic suv's out there?

Keep it Jeep!

its a bit too much for me. i like the JK interior, its modern enough to "keep with the times" but still be more rugged than most... that looks like they are trying for Italian leather but with plastic... whats next? a wrangler without a removable top???

the Jeep wrangler has never been a "high-end" model for Jeep brand... why change that? isnt that what the grand cherokee and commander are for? less they forget where the Jeep Brand actually CAME from? made by and for the working class no frills.

There are also pictures of the exterior with the matching color hardtop. Again, yuk and now it really looks like a hummer. Why not just rename it the H-4 and get it over with.

My sentiment, exactly...My 07's interior was definitely a pleasing change from all the "older" Wranglers I drove in before I bought mine...Of course, mine is a daily driver and a "minimal" looking interior would get old and boring very quickly...as far as the new models...the jury is still out as far as I'm concerned...but what can you expect from a company attempting to capture a myriad of potential buyers from soccer moms to over the hill baby boomers to first time buyer "kids" who love the "bling"??

i disagree with the "kids" liking the "bling". I'm 16, but my taste in jeeps seems to be on par with most people here. My friends are more into "blacked out" than blinged up.

Jeeps were first so hummers look like jeeps. This being said all jeep type vehicles are reaching an apex where they will all look alike. Jeeps are supposed to be rugged and top off weather proof to a certain extent. A lot of members of this forum run topless for the summer months. Imagine doing this in a 30,000.00 plus jeep. Could you spend that kind of money and leave it open to the elements? I know some TJ Rubicon models ran that price tag but they are pretty much weather proof. The JK is getting like the american population, fat, lazy and in need of a/c above 80 degrees. My prediction is that they will offer an electric retractable soft top to cover the fancy interior and your epidermis when that big yellow ball produces heat or big gray things cry on your parade. My wife keeps looking at JK's but I won't give up my TJ until they pry the steering wheel from my cold dead hands!

It's been said before by people much smarter than me, but what Chrysler is doing is necessary. I don't like anymore than you guys, but unless the Wrangler sells extremely well, it will die completely. And to sell really well it has to appeal to a wide audience, hence more bling and luxury or whatever you want to call it. I think what Chrysler/Jeep needs to do, is take the Rubicon, lessen the price and bring it back to it roots, utilitarian, waterproof interior, no fancy power windows or door locks, no matching hardtop (if it even comes with a hardtop), beefy axles and big tires, get rid of some of the extra plastic all over it. Leave the Sahara or some other luxury trim level to appeal to the wider masses.
