When the Teton Dam broke on June 5th, I had to get up to my repeater site 2 days later. Ended up taking 2 Motorola techs up to there's also. We only got about 2/3 of the way up due to snow. Had to call in a Huey to airlift us the rest of the way.
Two days later, with the level of the emergency, I felt I HAD to get vehicle traffic up to Ryan's Ridge so it was time to break trail. I had a government 77 Jeep Wagoneer with the 360/T18 and a PTO winch. Went alone so I wouldn't get into trouble because of others giving bad advice. Been there too many times.
I ended up winching 35 times just to get up to the repeater site. In one area I had to cross an old snow field on the NW side of canyon wall. Winching DOWN a 40 degree slope because the wheels broke through 4' of hard snowpack.
Once at the top it was nice and clear, just the NW side of the canyon where the trail wound up that was really bad.
Yep, it do snow in the mtns. I have taken the kids up there in August and had snowball fights.
