Jeep brand reliability

As I tell friends and family about how I may finaly get a Jeep Wrangler. It seems like alot of people give unfavorable opinions of Jeep/Dodge brands. I hear often that it is an overall unreliable brand of vehicle. So what do you owners say, since you actually drive Mopar?

Owned a '98 Ram 1500 before... crappy breaks.

All 5 of our Jeeps... solid performers! My XJ has well over 200k on it, and still runs like a champ. My mothers XJ(130k) runs like new(except for the cracked exhaust manifold - typical of the 4.0L)... and the only thing I'd had to fix on my sister's ZJ was an idler pulley a couple of weeks ago.

I'm a Jeep fan for life, thats for sure!

I've owned 2 DC products. 04 Ram 1500 ran great. 99 Wrangler also a great vehicle (Especially after what we put them thru). I definitely trust the Jeep brand.

Owned an 03 Ram 3500 for a business, I put 150,000 hard miles on it and the only time it went in the shop was for a valve adjustment.
My 91 Wrangler has 150,000 miles on it now and the angry little squirrels are still angry.
My wifes 99 Wrangler has about 90,000 and still running strong.

The only complaint I have about any of em is they use way too much plastic for the interiors, mechanically I can't complain at all.

I've got 167,000 on my TJ. Dad had a Dakota with 227,000 he traded it for a Durango and it has 125,000 in it, and he also has a 2500 Ram with 97,000 on it. The only problems so far were on my MJ (Commanche pickup) it had a Peugot tranny that really was crappy - after about 150,000 but that was before the buy out I think...My family has had pretty goo luck so far...

I've owned a Ford Bronco II 1989 brand new,I had nothing but problems with that truck.Every opportunity it had it wanted to spend time in the service department.

My Jeep Wrangler 06 brand new only issue I have had with it,is a warped rotor which the service department took care of right away (under warranty)

I had a 2001 Dakota - tranny went after 36000 and started having issues at 80000 with injectors.....

Hope the Jeep does me well. I've had it a month. Only my second DC product.

I've been partial to mopar since my father bought a grand fury with a 440 police intercepter engine. I have owned other brands also and have found they are all equal, sometimess you get a good one sometimes a bad one. Keep an open mind, sometimes brand loyalty does not let people see they have just as many problems as the other guy.

It's called jealousy. Don't sweat it. I bought my wrangler in 1999. It was one of the first 2000's to hit the lot. The only thing that has ever broken is a sway bar link. 8 years and 80k miles later I'm still running the original rear brakes and just changed out the fronts last year. Other than regular maintenance I've NEVER had a problem.

Also, the people that are telling you that Jeeps are unreliable, do they even own one? If not, how would they know?

My 2004 unlimited is the first DC product I've owned. At 20.7k the engine developed a really bad shake and seemed to be miss-firing. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the whole long block under warranty. They also replaced the whole soft top and rear window at the same time because the zipper was jammed. Overall, I'm very happy with my Jeep and have been very impressed with what it is capable of. All brands have their problems, it's all about the way the company handles them. I think DC does a pretty good job.

Never had any major problems (that weren't my own fault) out of the jeeps I have owned. I discovered a roof leak on the TJ this weak when I hosed it off but it is the door seal and not the top.

Don't get me started on the Ram 1500 I traded in for my TJ. Went through 3 Transmissions by 85k miles.

The other jeeps I have had were AMC so I can't really include them in this.

i think the only reason people may have found jeeps to be more problematic is that jeeps get wheeled alot harder than any other vehichle. WAY harder than other vehichles. of course more stuff will break when u put them through the crap we do

I had 3 CJ's a now my TJ only major problems I ever had was from rust or something my own stupidity caused. If you abuse your jeep it will break but it usually takes alot to cause the damage or years of neglect. One thing I would do is wait a year or 2 before buying the new JK style just so they can work the bugs out, and find out what people think after putting them through the ringer for a year. That's just generally what I do before purchasing any products from TVs, Atvs, Cars etc.

Jeep - The Only Brand You'll Ever Need

My son had a 1981 Scrambler we recently sold with 130,000+ miles on it and no mechanical problems. He currently has a 1996 Cherokee with about 170,000 miles on it and, again, no major mechanical problems. I had an '02 TJ and sold it with 86,000 and no mechanical problems for my '04 Unlimited (33,000 and no mechanical problems). Wife has an '00 Cherokee with 103,000 and (do I need to repeat it?) no mechanical problems except the evaporator in the air conditioning went out last year. This in spite of the abuse we give them off-road and driving through winters where we see 200+ inches of snow each year. I can't imagine life without our Jeeps. Nothing else made can compete with a Jeep.

This is my third Jeep and they appear to have the same problems as any other make. The more electronics, bells and whistles it has, the more issues seem to arrise. One of the reasons I like the TJ is that lack of extraneous electronics.

I spend time in many places online so have heard just about everything having its problems, the Jeep no more so than any of the other makes I have encountered and owned.

I got over 250k on my XJ Cherokee with minimal issues and have about 150k on my WJ Grand Cherokee with the same. The company I work for has provided XJs, ZJs, WJs and now WKs as company vehicles (over 20 so far) and they have all seemed to hold up well with up to 200k on the clocks.

I've been using my Jeep Wrangler for 11yrs now. and it never let me down. I used it as my daily driver and I was never disappointed with my baby and now I'm giving it a facelift. The Jeep's Suspension really tough. Its always ready for off-the-road challenges.

I told the guy that has been working on my car (03 Subaru WRX) that im thinking of selling it and buying a Jeep Wrangler.
The whole shop laughed out loud and asked me why I would want to. They said if it wasnt for jeeps and other domestics they would have no work around here.
Ive been reading this forum about people with 100-150-200k miles with no big problems. Why do they get such a bad rap?
They got me rally worried about reliability now

How many Jeeps were in the shop when you were there? Also, keep in mind that owner abuse or lack of maintenance causes problems that no manufacturer can prevent, you take care of your car, it takes care of you, even more true in a Jeep!

Most american car companies are the same.. The major parts last for a long time.. But expect little cheap parts you dont really need to break.. They save money on parts like a/c vents, knobs and trim parts, but the big parts like motors and trannies are just as reliable as a honda's as long as you take care of it.

I've never been a fan of Chrysler/Dodge products. That being said:

In our family we have 5 Wranglers (4 TJ's, '97-'05, and 1 YJ) and they all run great. No major problems except general maintenence & regular replacement stuff like brake pads, etc. 3 of them are over 100,000 miles.

my 98 has 182k and still runs like a champ. there's nothing wrong with jeep drivetrain unless it's been abused.

We had a Dodge Intrepid that I really liked. Only problems were the two aftermarket options we had installed for the wife. CD changer had the control head stuck to the dash and it kept falling off. Sunroof--the idiot who installed it broke the pillar trim pieces and managed to drive a screw into a wiring harness that ended up as an intermittant short.

Both the Intrepid and now my YJ are solid. But then so is my '02 Tahoe.
