Jeep cherokee question

I've got an older co worker who owns a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl. Same engine as in my 01 TJ. anyway, he's been having a problem with his oil pressure. At idle hot, it drops low enough (zero?) to turn on the check engine light. Normal driving hot runs around 30 or so. Normal driving cold is at around 40. So, as the engine gets hot, his oil pressure drops and at idle it's low enough for the check engine light to come on.

After reading several threads, seems this is common, and the oil sensor is usually the culprit. He doesn't do maintenance on the vehicle himself, he's up there in age and just can't do it anymore so he generally takes it to the dealer to have stuff like this taken care of. He said the oil sensor has been changed several months ago and the oil pump was changed before that. I think he stated that it did help but the problem has come back. I told him to get the sensor himself and I'd help him change it instead of paying the dealership you know what to do such a simple task.

Question is, anything else we should look for before going this route? The engine doesn't seem to have an oil leak and runs fine, it just seems to have a common problem that has been addressed but did not solve the problem completely.

My Jeep loses oil pressure once I get to the 3k mark...For the first 1k or so, the oil pressure stays at a solid 30-40psi.

IMO its just a Jeep thing.

thanks everyone. I think with what you've posted and further info gathered from him the problem is his bad habits and the nature of Jeeps.

I ask him what type of oil he used and he stated synthetic, not sure which weight. anyway, he has his oil changed every 10'000 miles with it.

I ask him why and he believes that synthetic can last that long.

I'm not an oil expert, maybe it will, maybe it wont. I told him he probably needed to have it done every 3000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first, like it used to be. I try to do that religiously and never had any problems with my vehicles. Anyway, I made the suggestion, expressing that a regular oil change schedule is an easy try and it can't hurt, only help.

Maybe....who knows. Seems that low oil pressure on Jeeps is kinda common from how many threads I've read, and maybe running any kind of oil for that long might compound the problem. not sure, but something to try before spending time and money chasing a gremlin.
