Not my wife's car...not even close! My wife for the last 16 years, has driven nothing but Grand Wagoneers, of the original variety, aka Full Size Jeeps.

She won't even look twice at current Jeep model aside from the Wrangler.

Sorry to disagree with you Pat...I'm thinking that a few more crash tests and it might look ok...

I dunno. Those Subaru's don't look like much to me but they will really surprise some people. Maybe it's a serious AWD system with a lockable center diff, maybe even has a low range. Maybe adjustable suspension and can really get some nice ground clearance. I assume Pat knows far more than we do.

But really ... who cares? Very few Wrangler enthusiasts are going to wind up in one of these. We may as well be griping about the latest Dodge minivan. This doesn't sully the Jeep brand any further than has already been done with the Patriot, Compass, Liberty, so why get worked up?

Agreed. This is a replacement for the Liberty, not the Wrangler.

Um cause it's not a wrangler? Why would you compare it to one when its not. You don't compare a compass and a wrangler so why even start such a stupid argument.

I get confused, because the old Cherokee was a unibody platform, right? So are people that dislike this vehicle just upset it doesn't have the solid axles of the old Cherokee? Or is it a style thing? Or just upset we aren't offered basic hard nosed, simple 4x4's anymore? Just wondering exactly what people really think in relation to the old Cherokee.

We were talking about the Trail Rated badge, specially, and all the standards that are implied by said badge.

That said, while of course it's not a Wrangler, it IS supposed to be a Cherokee. And I'm sure you already know this, but the XJ set some pretty damn high off-road standards itself. The primary reason Jeep enthusiasts should be upset is that the new version does not appear to meet those XJ standards, or even come close!

I sincerely hope that Pat is right, and that they do have some sort of new off-roading magic up their sleeve on the new Cherokee...

Ok lol so does this mean that the compass and patriot (which have these so called "trail rated" badges) are offroad capable? There not AT ALL they are useless. The badge is a marketing tool, it's a jeep emblem no different than a Chevy Bowtie, it's just something that ties the jeep brand to a vehicle. Any SUV jeep comes out with will be trail rated no matter what, you honestly think they care if a liberty, patriot, compass can go offroad? No! They are regular old SUVs with the same capabilities of escapes, equinoxs, rav4s etc. if jeep only sold true offroad vehicles, they wouldn't make as much money! All this is about is $ to them they could care less what us people think "off road capable" is. Any car/SUV/truck can do a dirt trail through a park, a trail is not defined as a rocky challenge that only some extreme offroad vehicles can handle.
If this trail rated badge was so important and meant so much, doesn't it mean that a compass is the same capability as a wrangler? They have the same so important badge, so doesn't that make them "rated for the same trail"? What a stupid argument, $ is $ and that's all FIAT cares about.

The term "American" is much more confusing now. Kia and Hyundai SUVs are made in Georgia and they don't have to factor unionized labor (PENSIONS!!!!) into their cost per unit.

Pat, you da man!

I am waiting for a replacement for my wife's 2007 JKU. I need for this to be the one.

I will not drop the coin for a GC. The other Jeep options are not doing it for me (or her).

Please keep us posted with as much info as you can.

Yeah not all the info has been made public, but this thing has a pretty awesome system. If it wasn't for the agreements I signed I would tell you all about it.

Personally I was very surprised an I'm guessing you will be as well.

Keep us posted on anything you can Pat. The outside appearance is just, well, horrible if you directly compare it to what a Cherokee should be - at least in my head. I hate how they changed an icon so much, although I would probably feel less hate towards it if they had just brought this vehicle in as a new model altogether.

Dear Jeep,
Please please please don't f up the next Wrangler the same way. My 2012 Wrangler already visited the service more times than any used junk I owned before and still, I love to look at it, I love to drive it, I love how I can't hear the radio on the highway and the way the water leaks straight into the CD slot. I love the squeaks and rattles, the poor build quality and the factory installed scratches on the interior. Myself and many others want no civilized shit. If we did we would have purchased a Cherokee... the one that used to look cool, not the one you just reminded us with that no good things last forever.
Or was it just a deliberate marketing attempt so we stop talking about the recent facelift? You know, 300 headlights framed with a seven slotted bulky plastic piece. You succeeded then big time!
Sugar rush, sorry.

Keep what info you can coming Pat! I'm very curious to see what the powertrain / MPG is. I really like the new GC Trailhawk, but can't justify the $47K pricetag for a long distance vehicle used only a few times per year.

As soon as I have the ok, I'll post all the info here. I don't care about pissing off corporate, it's more I don't want to take the chance of getting sued or Jeep corporate not inviting us to these meetings in the future. If I hadn't signed the agreement all the info I have would already be posted.

Did you guys miss Panthermark's post? This is not the replacement of the old Cherokee. This is the Liberty/Compass replacement. It looks a lot like the last generation Compass and I'm guessing it's closer to the size of the Liberty. It's going to have the new 3.2 version of the Pentastar. This will probably be a "world car" version which would explain the choice of moniker. As Panthermark said, the Liberty has always been known as the Cherokee outside of the USA.

Pat, thank you for trying to provide a ray of sunshine (hope) on this otherwise gloomy day in Jeep history. As always, I very much look forward to all the info you can share once you get the green light.

I am ready and willing to be impressed, so do your best! lol

1. That front end is so ugly not even its own mother would probably love it. No excuse for such ridiculous styling on a Jeep.
2. This thing wasnt worthy of the name Cherokee. This is just another lame soft roader like the Compass and Patriot. The fact Chrysler used the Cherokee name on this was their biggest error by far.
3. I dont think this will sell. I have seen hundreds of comments on it and 98% are shocked at how Jeep has created another Aztek. We know how that worked out for GM and Pontiac. Watch for an emergency redesign, production cut backs and 0% financing and no money down leases on these in the near future.....

I drove a 97 xj for like 13 years. I loved it. It was simple, pretty fun to drive and tough. Also it's design stood the test of time very well. I never thought I was driving a vehicle that looked super dated. To me it had some of what makes a wrangler magical (the big missing parts were the removable top and doors)

However I see no real need to bring it back as a solid axle off roading beast. The best current replacement for it is the hardtop wrangler unlimited. Jeep does have to compete in other market segments and personally I always hated the looks of the liberty and the compass. The patriot was just ok. This Cherokee doesn't look too bad to me though I'd change the headlights. I'm getting a land rover evoque vibe from it and I think the evoque looks really good.

So I'm hoping this is a much better vehicle than the liberty/compass/patriot and does well for jeep.

Besides we all know that once you go wrangler you never go back... So as long as they don't screw it up I'm happy.

How do you know it is a lame offroader? Pat has way more visibility than any of us and he sounds excited. Sure, it looks like just another crossover but Jeep has built some really cool stuff and not always just on the Wrangler. Look at how much the BLD feature adds to the capabilities of many different Jeep models.

As the proud owner of an XJ, I think anything that is not a utilitarian box should not have the name Cherokee on it. At least not without the word Grand in front of it. Maybe they will change it to Grande to keep up with the hipster coffee crowd.

dont care for the style but i would warm up to it if it was an xj inside. I LOVE the later XJ's..... they were beasts and could be build to do some crazy stuff easily.
