I may get flamed over this, but I'd go Japanese over Jeep.

The mother of my niece did the cash for clunkers thing and got a Compass. She really enjoys the little family-mobile.

It's a cheapo wannabe Jeep family car... if that is what you need then go for it. Needs supersedes wants.

I like the new grand Cherokee too but its out of the budget. Ive been finding a lot of low mileage 09 compasses for around 15k. We might go test drive one tomorrow.

My mom has a 09 compass and loves it, Just this past Monday I borrowed it to go to a concert in NH (way more comfortable ride than my TJ or Silverado for three people). After driving it four hours each way on everything from Interstate to small town back roads I really couldn't complain. It is much more of a car than a Jeep, but it rides and handles great and the gas mileage is pretty decent.

I haven't driven it in Winter my self, but my mom hasn't had any issues at all with it since she bought it. She says it will go anywhere she wants to go.

In the end, as long as you are looking for a tar baby I say give one a test drive and see what you think.

Thanks for all the replys. About 2 years ago we rented a Kia minivan for a long trip and after that experience I will NEVER own a Kia. This thing only had 4k miles and everything just felt loose and thrown together. Hopefully we will get a chance to test drive the compass tomorrow.

looks pretty good with a little lift kit on it. would be a neat little toy in the snow or on fire roads.

Jeep Patriot lift kit (suspension) and Compass
you might be surprised at what they can do off road.
check out this vid of the mopar underground patriot.

and yes, i know thats a patriot, but if i remember correctly, the patriot and compass share the same platform.
