My mom has a 09 compass and loves it, Just this past Monday I borrowed it to go to a concert in NH (way more comfortable ride than my TJ or Silverado for three people). After driving it four hours each way on everything from Interstate to small town back roads I really couldn't complain. It is much more of a car than a Jeep, but it rides and handles great and the gas mileage is pretty decent.
I haven't driven it in Winter my self, but my mom hasn't had any issues at all with it since she bought it. She says it will go anywhere she wants to go.
In the end, as long as you are looking for a tar baby I say give one a test drive and see what you think.

"The Jeep is a manly device. And a womanly device. An American device. It’s a fitting instrument to transport the free people of a free nation with the respect to which we are entitled and the dignity that we deserve. Okay, we’re a little crazy to have a Jeep for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius"-P.J.O'rourke
Thanks for all the replys. About 2 years ago we rented a Kia minivan for a long trip and after that experience I will NEVER own a Kia. This thing only had 4k miles and everything just felt loose and thrown together. Hopefully we will get a chance to test drive the compass tomorrow.
License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote.
