I always drove power wheels Jeeps when I was little and couldnt wait untill I could buy a real one. When I was little I always just wanted a jeep with the square headlights. I got my yj when I was 15. Im about to turn 19 and have owned no other vehicle besides the jeep yet. I got mine for 1200 dollars, but that was a family deal. I always worked on cars with my dad growing up but didnt know much about jeeps. All I knew was it had square headlights and it was cheaper then any other one I could find so obviously I bought it. After I got it I started researching, mad that I got one with the 2.5l but got lucky since it was a 92 so it was mpi, but everything else was pretty damn good looking for 160,xxx on it. So for a year or so I hated myself at jumping the gun and getting one with the 2.5l but that slowly changed and some how I fell in love with the 2.5l. My dad was and still is worried about it not having air bags, and that I went from a family cage to a sport cage, but he did like that it was slow, lol. He always asks me when Im gonna sell it and get something more practical, because he laughs when I load it up with metal to take to the scrap yard, and when I show up with me and 4 friends packed in it and to get something with a little more then 10mpg. Besides that I only have a 5 minute drive to work so none of that bothers me, like i tell him its a jeep thing. If it wasnt for me and my best friend wheeling it to death, im sure it would still look new. So in the past few years Ive put a solid $800 into it to keep it going, but at least $600 of that was due to me knowing it was going to break as I kept driving it. Now if you ask me thats not to bad for owning it for almost 4 years and like I said it could have been cheaper if I didnt do the things I did. Literally just the other day it hit 200,000 miles, and the clutch started to go, which is funny cause for the past few months ive been telling everybody once it hits 200,000 its gonna blow up so I can drop a 6 or an 8 in it, but instead it was just my clutch. So another $150 but thats more common then $600 from when I blew up my tc(getting it sideways, like its a car). I got several of my friend around my age give or take some want to sell there sonatas and acuras and hondas and even a few full/mid sized picukups to get a jeep. Everybody loves when theres no top on it and no doors and alot of the times they want to go off roading, even when the never have before. Ive taught a few people how to drive a stick in it and when they go buy a car(because the cant afford a jeep lol) they say driving what ever manual car the got it like an automatic compared to my jeep, and people only get to drive it with me in it. Only problem it every single dollar I make that itsnt for rent, food, etc goes in to my jeep, wether its gas or the oil it burns to the tires and rims I just got(and we all know that its just gonna get bigger). But dont keep anything important in it, I never have an never will. I would say its not a bad choice for a first vehicle. And Im not getting rid of it anytime soon, if I stop driving it, itll become a lawn decoration but I dont see that happening anytime soon. Im even looking for another Jeep, but not a wrangler, a comanche(mj).

Yea it was long, but Im at work and have nothing better to do.

TL;DR - Id say a good first vehicle.

Don't know if you're still checking, but I'm 17.

I've saved up money from literally every event/holiday/gift I could imagine, including money from work.

I spent a good $16,000 on a ridiculously clean 2005 TJ Unlimited with little to no rust, and have loved every minute of it.

A couple of the nice parts about a Jeep is the fact that:

A: I'm not car wash obsessive like the other guys at my school. (I actually enjoy mud all over the side of my ride.)

B: It's been somewhat easy to do customize it to my liking. I got a decent stereo system installed with some help from the family (Which conveniently would've only fit in the unlimited or I would've had to put down a row of seats.) I have a 48" farm jack strapped to the roll bars right above the Subwoofer Enclosure (Used pieces of rubber and aluminum and a leather belt to get it to stay in place nicely, looks decent too.) An 8,000 Pound Capacity Mile Marker Winch for the front covered with a Mile Marker bag, and the Fairlead is covered by my license plate that may freely flip up and down when necessary (Purchased a kit but I felt like somebody could just rip it off too easily so I bent some steel and drilled some holes and now it's nice and secure.) Blacked out tail lights, signal lights etc. Did some interior LED work at the front (More family help) So that the lighting comes on when the stereo is turned on. And lastly, drilled a hole through the (Want to say hood latch but I know those are for the sides) in the middle of the jeep just in the center of the grill, slapped a lock on it and boom, my hood is now un-openable without the key. Would've put new rims and a slight lift in this little write up but they came with the Jeep so it doesn't count.

Next up: HornBlasters Shocker XL Train Horn, Blackout Decal on the hood, and maybe some Diamond paneling under the doors. Also relocation of those pesky mirrors.

C: (Probably forgot that I was doing lettering at this point but oh well) It has greatly improved my driving skill. Being in a vehicle that you're aware will **** you over if your drive like an idiot (Excess speeds) really helps you slow down and enjoy the ride. (Although I guess a negative is that if there's little parking bumps and side barriers made of concrete you get little urges to run them over for the hell of it, mostly because you can. I've never acted on the urge to run things over yet, but I can tell you it's a pain in the ass to keep yourself in line.) For daily road driving though you'll find yourself being more of a careful driver

D: Waving. No explanation. Just wave. (Although I've noticed a larger amount of new JK owners aren't aware of this and I find myself looking like a moron in front of people, however... Wave on)

E: You can take things off and drop things down.

F: Most people are willing to help, if you have problems, if you need a tip, mod details etc. And they're happy to do it just to see the Jeep Legacy live on.

Summary:

It's a generally all around amazing vehicle that aids you in not driving like an idiot (Unless your anywhere not on a road) that has no age cap and no limitations (Although you might be pushing it if you want it as a submarine) and that I'm sure you'd enjoy. In fact I joined the forums just to write this up for you. So... I guess owning a Jeep has also made me more sympathetic to other Jeep owners with questions that need to be answered. Go figure.

If you end up with a Jeep, enjoy it. It'll be one of the best personal investments and experiences you could have.



Side Note: Your musical tastes may be affected too. I never pictured myself being seventeen rocking this down the street with a couple buddies in the car laughing our asses off at hummers and cheesy riced up hondas.



This is coming from a guy who's musical primary is intricate rap, but Jeeps tend to change you up a bit.

Now the only problem I see with a Jeep for a first car is that it's like a first love, if you ever get rid of out and go with something you think is better for you age (when you're older), you will still love that damn Jeep. Then you get older and say WTH, life is an adventure and buy another Jeep "stock" so you fix it up again and live the entire journey making it your own and the adventures you'll have all over again. At least that's how it happend to me.

Jeeps are first love. Seeng as mine was my first vehicle, are reading that other people get rid of them then buy another I've decided I'm never getting rid of mine. I've promised everybody that and I'm gonna hold to it. You can't put a price on mine.

And I've always listened to rap. When people see me step out of my jeep with dr. Dre bumpin and see my jeep all mudded and what I'm wearing and that I'm white they are normally pretty shocked.

I know the feeling (Both on the first love and white boy rap parts.) The Power Wheels hit home too. Battery pack was a killer to change though.

Oh yea they were. I rember my dad helping me put the rubber bungie cords around the tires for traction in the snow and everything else since the plastic spun on everything and on the power wheels they make now the integrated a rubber strip on the tires, like the bungie cord. Makes me laugh pretty good seeing as I was pretty far ahead of them lol

my dad grew up buying/rebuilding jeeps in his younger years and its passing on to me. I now own a WJ Overland and am looking for a JK. I'd say go for it... I know he misses owning one.

Lol like I said in my essay I got a lot of people to learn how to drive a manual. I love driving one, and if I have to drive somebody elses vehicle and its an auto I find myself going for the clutch often. And when my ingnition lock broke before I fixed it and my friends would ask(seeing as I never lock it or when theres no top on) how do you know nobody would steal it? I would always say because not to many people can drive a manual so Im pretty safe, and not alot of people would think the ignition lock is broken.

My 2 cents...

By a Jeep, they are fun durable and fun. But what ever you do make sure its a manual not enough kids know how to drive one anymore. I include myself in this group i am 24 and just bought my first manual a year and a half ago a 2012 Wrangler Sport s. Sure I might have been a little rough learning the finer points but I love my Jeep and I love my manual. Its a built in anti-theft device and will keep most people from borrowing it.

As for as cost of repair - I bought my Jeep for its reliability. Wranglers have been one of the highest valued resale vehicles for over ten years. That says something about quality.

Mine is my first vehicle...

Just a be prepared for lots of work keeping it nice and rust free. And 10 mpg.

I GOT A JEEP TODAY GUYS. 98" with a small lift running 33"s but I'm pulling them down to 31 most likely cause its too much. It's so amazing got a hardtop for the cost too with 132,xxx miles. I couldn't have made the decision without the help from all of you guys. I love it with all my heart

Look buy it and you won't ever look back. As far as safety a wrangler is not the best bet, gas mileage not the best bet, affordability not the best bet. But you can't kill them no matter how hard you beat on them... and i haven't met a girl yet that didn't thoroughly enjoy riding around without the top or doors. No one notices the kid in the honda or the late model F-150 however the kid with the wrangler turns all kinds of heads. There's guys with lifted trucks certain types of muscle cars that mommy and daddy bought that you won't be able to afford but you know what nostalgia f*$k the haters. 4x4 for winter if it applies to you top off for summer conditions ive had my 04 for almost 4 years and every time i want to get something new i just think of when summer rolls around and how uneventful rolling down to the beach would be in a truck or a sweet car. So all in all terribly impractical first vehicle, however practicality never got anywhere in life so go out buy the baddest wrangler you can afford and run it into the ground because you will enjoy the shit out of it and that concludes my rant.
