I am looking to purchase my first wrangler unk:. The guys said it was a mutt/(different years frame and body). The title and vin match 1983, and it says yj7 on and emblem on the fender. He said it has dana40 front and rearends with international scout axles. It has leaf springs front and rear. I included a picture, just want to make sure i know what im getting and make sure its worth it. I have no idea how to identify rearends, frames, body styles, ect, ect any info would be appreciated.
thanks guys
Ronnie
It has the body of a YJ. The rollbar is angled so you have the body from anywhere from an '87 to a '91 YJ. The frame off of an '83 CJ7.
Dana40? I must be missing something. I didn't think such a thing existed. Hell, I even knew about the Dana28! But Dana40? Maybe it was an International Scout thing, but I thought they had Dana44 fronts and Dana60 rears. I dunno, I'm not a Scout guy.
It also appears that he re-routed the fuel system to the rear quarterpanel on the passenger side. The YJ has it under the license plate on the drivers side, and a CJ7 had it below the taillight on the passenger side...
It looks built fairly well, but to me, it smells a bit like a lemon waiting to rot.
Unless he is offering it for a ridiculously low price even with the mods, I'd stay away from it. If the price is less than $3500, I'd take it just for fun. You never know.
Judging by your question I would say that this one is not a real good choice for your first jeep. I've seen some pretty weird setups where you spend more time figuring out what hell tranny/transfer case/diff/etc it is than it takes to get it out and fix it. For you first jeep you really should have a vin printout that matches the jeep you buy. It's like you buy a jeep with one of the aftermarket disc brake conversions and then go thru hell trying to figure out what rotors they used or whose brake pads will fit. Just my take on it, that one would be a real steep learning curve I'm thinking....
Sorry thats what he said dana 44s. The jeep has a 350 sbc manual 4speed trans and 2001 interior. new wheels and tires. You think its worth only $3,500?

That depends, I'm pretty good with TJ's, YJ's and XJ's but I would probably not get that one, like I said, too many variables, I like my junk to run and while it does appeal to me it would be relegated to toy status, not anywhere near a daily driver or one I needed to get around with.
What are you looking for, a DD, weekend toy, dedicated off roader ?
This Jeep its to complicated to be your first jeep.
Unless you are real familiar with jeeps or a mechanic then go a head.
I think you are buying someone else problem.
Alright, have fun. But we are gonna have to teach you the ropes of Jeeping pretty damn fast if you ask me. I hope you have a daily driver, and I hope its not a Honda. :banghead:
i am a certified mechanic+pro welder so working on it wouldnt be a problem plus the jeep is ready to run anyway it has full posi front and rear spools. no rust holes or patches in the body/floor at all.
I am 26 i rebuilt only one jeep engine in my life time. And i am not familiar with wranglers. Quit talking shit i asked for help identifing what it is not your smart ass input.
not dawging the army my grandfather was in world warII and my father and 3 uncles where in veitnam when war was for our country and freedom. not for good insurance and a job in the future, fighting for bush's oil hurray!
Guys if you want to fight take it to PM. The Tech Sections need to stay tech.
Skilled - There a thread around here where one of our members did a YJ to TJ swap (or the other way around ) it may shed some light on some of the pro's and con's.
