Jeep Rescue Organization?

I've heard that there was once an organization founded by Jeepers to volunteer their services for disasters, etc. I am sure some of you have heard of the recent explosion in West, Texas last night, which is near to us. It got me thinking that well-equipped Jeeps with trained drivers who have experience in military, law enforcement, SAR, EMT, etc would be one heck of a useful group of people when disaster strikes. Does anyone know what happened to the original group? Would anyone be interested in doing it?

I remember seeing about this a while back. Don't know what happened. The folks were kinda like first responders but in beefed up wranglers.

During the Katrina aftermath our church sent some jeeps and 3 trucks to the area. We brought axes and chain saws. They used the stuff to remove trees from peoples houses. We did it for free. There were companies charging a ton for it. The Jeep winches and chain saws made short work of the trees. We paid for them there for 2 weeks plus all the gas and food. The jeeps really did a great job. The guys volunteered their time off work. It's a great idea. But we had to work where the Police and Fire sent us. The guys were so up when they got back. They said the people really appreciated their help.

4X4 response groups are well established in the UK, and provide assistance to the emergency services during periods of bad weather (snow above an inch to a Brit). I think it's a great idea, I'm ex-military and would love to do something like that, but I'm a bit far from TX... Sadly

Yes, I recently joined Team Rubicon which kind of inspired me to get a Jeep group together! I'm going to do some more research on this...

Not sure of the "one" group you are talking about but many jeep clubs volunteer for such activities with the local and state police. When they are needed they do call.

I was a volunteer firefighter in my past and am currently CLS instructor certified,EMT cert, and work SAR. When the tornado took out Joplin MO, I was there in 4 hours with my jeep and equipment with a small trailer of extra SAR bags donated by the KANG. All it took was a call from the Missouri hiway patrol to get me there. (I'm a MO resident stuck in kansas).

Get with your local jeep clubs and discuss this as an opportunity to help others. Get with the state authorities to be legit and help some people out.

PLEASE...I do not encourage people to just show up in jeeps to preform SAR without proper training. EMT classes are important as is life saving skills. Helping out is great but just being there to be there can be an interruption to trained members.

There is many things jeep clubs can volunteer too help out with other than just disasters too. Every winter I help out by just driving doctors and nurses to hospitals when the weather/snow gets bad.

Our chapter of Military Jeepers has teamed up with the city of Killeen to be a CERT component. There are some rural areas in their jurisdiction that they would like 4x4s to access in an emergency, and us all being military/veterans we have a TON of other useful disaster skills. We are just now standing it up so we aren't sure exactly what we will be doing and training in, but I think its pretty cool. It's also not limited to Military Jeepers so if you are in the Bell County area and want to be a part of it, message me!

I know this is an old thread but I've been interested in finding a SAR group in the Houston area. I won't lie, I have little training but would be willing to learn. I just know a lot of people put a lot of money and energy into their rig, it could be a huge asset in times of need.
