Jeep vs Deer

So I have to leave for work pretty early in the am, needless to say its still dark, and the way I go to work is pretty rural and there is all kinds of animals all over. I am driving on this road which I am about a mile from my house and for some reason I didn't have my brights on even though nobody else was out but usually I do run them for this reason of seeing what may be in the road. Well no brights on and out of the corner of my eye I see something on the side of the road coming across and I put the brakes on as hard as possible and sure enough it was a deer. At this point I'm still stopping because of the sure weight of the Jeep, then I thought if there is one deer there is more, there was a second one who was spooked as well and it looked like she tried to avoid me as much as I was doing the same but she ended up smacking the Jeep right in the front and she hit pretty hard that she actually bounced off and went a good 7 o 8 feet in front of me, you could tell she was dazed but jumped up and took off. I continued my journey to work, when I got to work and parked because it looked it over and surprisingly no damage to the Jeep and didn't notice any driving issues either. Unfortunately the deer didn't make it. I was shocked I got no damage, i was talking to a guy at work and he was telling me he had a big Chevy truck one time and he was driving home and saw some deer in the road so he slowed up thinking they would cross in front of him, they did expect one who ran head first into his truck dented up his metal bumper, so I feel lucky so far.

I had something very similar happen a few years back when I had a Ford Ranger. I slammed on the breaks to avoid hitting a deer crossing the road, and luckily I was able to stop in time. However, there were three other deer waiting to cross and one of them ran into the driver side of the truck at full gallop.

Long story short, the damage was over 2000$ ... and that was from a deer hitting me, not me hitting it. I shudder to think what would have happened if I plowed into one at 40 or 50 MPH.

Not a jeep and not me but my uncle had a lowered civic hatchback and was doing good speed on a wooded road during the day time and the road was one of those roller coaster ones and ended up landing on top of a deer off a hill. Car was pretty banged up but he was able to get it fixed.

dang that's so lucky I would've thought it made like a small dent or cracked the plastic flares but hey that's great

I've hit 2 in a Silverado with no damage, both went completely under the truck. I hit one in a Ranger and completely jacked up the front end, body and suspension. When my new bumper got dropped off at my house from the powder coater, I had to make a quick trip to a buddy's house to pick up my fog lights. While there I cracked a joke about hitting one with no bumper on my Jeep. Sure enough, on the way home one ran out in front of me, but I was able to (narrowly) avoid it.
Glad everything's ok!

Both my deer were in F-250's. The first was hit as I was decelerating from 100 mph. (It was that kind of road, arrow straight and deserted.) I saw that buck and hit the brakes hard. The deer did a pirouette on its front legs and bounded off. I searched for it in case it need to be put down and never found it. Damage? A small dent in the right front fender about the size of half a hot dog.

The second was hit at about 75 mph and I didn't even see it coming. I had a pretty substantial grill guard on the truck and the deer did about $4000 worth of damage. Insurance paid for the new grill guard, the damage and waived the deductible because the grill guard reduced the damage to the truck. The adjustor figured that without the grill guard, damage would have been in the $9000 range. The deer was killed and pretty mangled. I dragged it about 300 feet and couldn't pull it out, so I headed to the shoulder and into the ditch and when I backed up, the deer dislodged and stayed in the ditch. I did have to pull parts out later, but most stayed in the ditch.

deer are always a concern here, after years of driveing without hitting any, i was on my way home frome work at about 2am when all of a sudden a doe ran into the side of my s10 i had the window down and her head was in my truck between the steering wheel and my head,,,she was o.k., then the very next night i thought lightning wont strike twice well it did just a couple mile,s from the night before i went threw a curve and the road was full of deer i missed most of them but 1 wasnt as lucky -i had to finish it off with a hatchet,,---no damamge to my old s10 though..

i have come a hair of hitting several while rideing my atv...that would be worse than awfull at the speed i ride--lol

Yeah I have always heard hitting a deer is like hitting a brick wall and vehicles don't stand a chance. I do know if I still had my eclipse I would have had a deer on the hood no way it couldn't have avoided that. I drove that way again this morning but this time I had the brights on and sure as shit a little further up the road another deer came running across the road! Luckily I was not close but still, no i have cold sweats driving thru there lol. I'm going to keep checking but yeah no damage at all, very lucky. I really thought it was going to get stuck and I would be dragging it with me. But it was good eatings for something or someone because it was gone when I went thru there yesterday. I will say one thing that's one hell of way to get woken up. Lol. Thanks for comments and concerns on my well being.

Never hit any, been mighty close too many times to count. Around here deer (auto) insurance is an available line item.

I used to live in a cottage built in the 1840s as a slave cabin that was about 50 yards from the rail line and about 300 to the highway, Va Rte 29 for any familiar. At the time I worked 2nd shift, 1530-0330, so I got home between 2 and 4 usually. At times, I would walk out to the front porch and literally see a heard of deer playing what I can only describe as King of the Mountain, or that ol football drill where one stands in the middle and is challenged by the rest, one by one. One night, I sat having a smoke, and heard a weird squishy thump... I found out what in the morning. An 18 wheeler had hit a deer, and if you have never seen the effect, vaporization and disintegration come to mind as good descriptors. I thought that was as exploded as a deer could be, until a train hit one, lol. Boom goes the dynomite, there was nothing left.

Driving to work yesterday, deer darts in front of me. Big girl, too. On the way home, come around the corner and 6 of em are chillin in the road. Saw a couple on the way home today, that's pretty common here - but with all the rain, I got about 15 miles from home, back in the woods, came around a corner, and 3 big ol black-as-night cows are looking at me, right in the middle of the road. Seems their fence washed out.

I don't go fast, and for good reason.

For those who dispatched deer - particularly with bladed weapons - I hope ya'll at least got some flank steaks! Seen that more than once... hanging out with the smoker goin and somebody shows up with the other half of the deer they hit, lol.

Great post. Glad you haven't ran into any and I had to laugh at the description you gave of mashed deer lol I use to work in the heart of down Memphis I live an hour n half away, so it was I 40 (interstate 40) the whole way and I always seemed to miss when all the deer had been hit because there was always parts and blood all over, expect for one time I don't know if it was a herd of deer or if maybe it was a pregnant doe but that drive home once was nothing but body parts and I mean both lanes for a good couple miles was nothing but that, you had drive on the shoulder just so your car wouldn't get beat up from all the body parts. It was the nastiest thing I ever saw, stuff like that doesn't bother me but that did just because of the sheer amount. Something I won't ever forget. I don't go fast thru that section I had the incident at, I'm white knuckling it for sure, can't wait for summer lol. Cows in the road I'm sure that will be the next thing I ended up plowing in to. Lol

I was with a buddy in his 26' box truck and we had a deer jump out in front of us at around 50 mph. It destroyed the deer, and made a pretty big mess all over the road.
