Jeep/Warn winch questions

I have a Jeep Special Equipment winch manufactured by Warn. I know it's bacically a 8274 with a Jeep tag on it. What I'm trying to do is date it.

Anyone out there got ideas on how to date this winch?

Serial # 93806

Ive got one too, being its a clutch type like mine its no earlier than a 77 and more likely a 79-80....I think they quit selling them via dealer around then.

Have you tried to contact Warn customer service? They may be able to help.

And the back of it shows a date of 4/77. I know that is close to when they were made because I remember going with my dad to the Jeep dealer for a training on them when I was a kid.

Big, If you don't mind, I'd like to jack your pictures to try and find one of these manuals to buy. I'd like to find an early 80s edition. If you know of any, please let me know. Thanks

Try calling Warn. They still offer parts for the winch, at least as of last year they did.

You should be able to find a date code stamped in the housing, something like MRVB-7.

With that information, they can date it for you.

Honestly they are all the same inside, the only difference being the Jeep decal instead of a Warn one. I rebuild at least 2 a year for people and pretty much every part is available.

....came through again. They were able to date my winch at 84 or 85, probly an 85 off a CJ-7.

They did send me a couple of PDFs with Maintenance, Parts and wiring schematic.

And a link to the history of the 8274. Did you know the 8274 actually means something. 8 = 8000lbs, 2 = two way(power in and out) and 74 for the first year of production.
