I don't get many waves in the central Ohio area when I'm driving my TJ.

I don't get ANY waves when I'm drivin' my Grand Wagoneer. What gives??

"The wave" really only applies to wranglers and cj's...occasionally we'll wave at a modded jeep of another kind cause they obviously know what jeeps are all about if they've got it modded out, but most of the people who drive grand cherokees, libertys, ect. dont know a thing about the jeep wave and they just look at you funny.

Not to mention how few people actually recognize what a Waggy is, most think it's either a Bronco or Blazer.. I usually wave at any built up jeeps, regardless of model, at least when I'm driving mine!

Jeep wave

I consider it a priveledge

From Dirt Road Magazine

"Owning, registering, insuring, or driving a Jeep implies knowledge of and intent to abide by the following rules, regulations, and guidelines. Failure to obey the letter or spirit of the rules may result in your being ignored by other Jeep owners as you sit along the side of the road next to your stalled vehicle in a blizzard surrounded by Saturns, Yugos, and Hyundais."

Jeep Wave

The Jeep wave is indeed for Wranglers and CJ types only - never for anything else. I wave every opportunity I get and receive waves back about 60% of the time. I think there needs to be a requirement that every dealer of new or used Wrangler Jeeps be required to provide a "Jeep Wave" information sheet for the new owners, read it for them or with them and have the new owners sign a commitment form to wave every time they see a Wrnagler or CJ pass by. Only wishin' it could be true.

So as a little experiment I thought I'd do as a brand new member of the jeep community I went ahead and drove down to Cannon Beach, Or from Seattle yesterday and waved and counted every jeep I saw on the trip down. In that 3.5 hrs I saw and waved at 21 jeeps. Of that, 3 waved back. It broke down like this:

1 CJ (lightly modded) no wave
7 YJ's various stages 1 wave back from a girl in a stock white one with a hardtop
9 TJ's various stages 2 waves 1 from a stock one and 1 from a muddy, lifted, soft top with the windows zipped out hardcore jeeper.
4 JK's one of which was modded out, and he skoffed at me.

Western WA drivers are killing me on the jeep wave.

I am convinced that jeeps are built at a specific height only noticeable to other jeepers. I spot jeeps all the time and my passengers are usually like wtf I didnt see one. I guess you gotta be a true jeeper to notice them. Then again I have an insane sense for identifying vehicles...

I once got a topless wave from a female jeeper... totally made my day!!

waving

I read about the wave before I had a wrangler and had forgotten. On the way home with my minutes old purchase I met an oncoming wrangler and she waved. I returned the wave and had to explain to my son why I was waving at a stranger! Haven't missed an opportunity to wave yet...and yes I catch myself waving from my other vehicles

Yeah, no crap bro. especially if 4-5 jeeps do that to you a day. These western WA people are just like that I guess. Eastern WA I have no problems. I'd say 90%+ jeeps wave back, and it doesn't depend on anything that they are doing or what kind of jeep it is. With the exception of the JK, but those people are new, they'll learn.

There are plenty of exceptions to this comment. However the vast majority of people that I see rolling around in JK's in my local area are asian soccer moms, not all pro jeepers like yourself.

Didn't realize you blue grass boys were so easily offended.

I think most of the peeps that don't wave back either just don't see my wave or are too preocupied. But this morning I did get a very strange look from a guy guy when I waved at him in his CJ. I think he's trying to figure out who i am (if he knows me) Those just make me Laugh. It's all good I try too keep tradition alive and have one gal I pass almost evry day i get a smile and a wave. So Poop on the rest if they don't wave back it's there loss.

No Jeep wave in NM

Hey NM (Santa Fe, Taos) Jeepers, just got back from a vacation in your beautiful state. I was in my TJ and saw TONS of other Jeeps and I waved to every one of them and never got a wave back?? You guys in NM not part of the Jeep family?

On a side note I never thought of my TJ as a good long distance hauler but after logging nearly 2k miles on this vacation I would say it is comfortably tolerable.
