As I'm writing this, I'm visiting my daughter in New Orleans. Thursday, I had the opportunity to visit the National World War II Museum here. AWESOME!!! This is my third time here, and they keep adding more artifacts every time I come. The 4-D movie is fantastic!
While on the first floor, I was showing my daughter the Jeep with trailer that was on display (NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED IN THE MUSEUM! Sorry, no pics this post!).
I was explaining various parts of the Jeep, like the Machine Gun, Wire Catcher on the front Bumper, 9-Slot Grille, etc., to my daughter, when two elderly Gents, in their 80's, came up to us. They immediately asked me, if I knew where the term "JEEP", originated from. I explained to them, that it was thought to be from the term "General Purpose", where the "GP" was used, and pronounced, "JEEP". One Gent smiled at the other, and said, "These kids are actually learning something in school!", and then they both laughed (I'm 54...).
Then I told them the other story was the critter from the Popeye Cartoon, "JEEP", and they both shook their heads and said, "NO"!!! It came from "General Purpose", or "GP", or "JEEP".
NEVER..... argue with two WW-II Vets that were there and drove them, when the Jeep was in it's infancy. As for me, I'm sticking solely with the General Purpose version of JEEP from here on out!
