Jeeps the worst to own preown?

Reading on MSN, I took a look at the 15 worst vehicles to buy used. Needless to say the Jeep Wrangler from years 2007-2012. Here's the article credited to MSN Autos:

The rough Jeep Wrangler is an off-road champion, but that doesn't mean it gets away free and clear when it comes to reliability. Squeaks and rattles plague Wranglers from 2007 to 2012, while suspension issues plague the SUV from 2007 to 2008 and major drive system failures are common from 2007 to 2010. Complaints about the SUV's fuel system and transmission problems from 2007 to 2010 round out the list.

But didn't JK's get worse ratings when they first came out? But then they got better from what I heard. Don't see how the TJ and JK are that bad. Heck, my '00 had the tendency to literally catch fire on the highway for certain '00-some year because of this.

So what do you all think of this article?

People don't care for the minivan engine in the earlier JKs. That's most of it. The deathwobble is largely documented and able to be diagnosed/fixed pretty readily.

The worst thing about buying a preowned Wrangler is the high resale value. Even a clapped out Wrangler is $4500 minimum. That's why a bought new, versus saving only a few hundred on a used one.

Most of the problems that "plague" the Wrangler are simple fixes... A zip-tye here, a bolt or nut there.

I don't see how that article applied to the TJ at all. The TJ is 1997-2006. The article states 2007-,which is JK.

I shouldn't be blamed for what my younger brother does. After all, he is "Just Kidding".

I had a JK, bought it new. It was beyond a doubt the worst vehicle I have owned even including the Chevy Vega I was gifted as a graduation present. At least I did not buy it. My TJ is a much better vehicle and so much more fun to drive.

You apparently did not own a 2012+. Much different (and better) than previous years, with the new 3.6L, 285 hp engine and updated powertrain. It is the reason why Wranglers are breaking sales records year after year now.

Yeah but the new ones are still WAYYYY over priced. And don't even get me started on the factory outfitters editions..I was looking at new ones out of Texas...HOLY HELL they wanted 110K for a Urban Outfitters edition my wife wants...I about fell out of my seat. I told her I would buy a low milage TJ and send it to Adams Off-road in my state and have it outfitted and painted to match for 30K with a 50K warranty..

A new engine, that would not fix most of the things I hated about it. Yeah, the engines are horrid, the rest of it equally so.

You're right the TJ is the perfect family vehicle for long trips unlike the JK.

This article is no worse or different than the recent one in Consumer Reports. It is written by test drivers used to testing SUVs, Mini Vans and family sedans. Of course the JK cannot provide the comfort of any of them to the type of driver that does not value it's off road prowess.

The don't mention the TJ, YJ, CJ or any other classic because it is about current production vehicles.

Actually depends on how you get it, sticker on my 05 tj rubi was 32000 On my 13 jk rubi it was 34500..... I got a great deal on the 13 because i just got it, it was a holdover.... but both were auto no power anything... so price is about the same....
That said i loved my tj and still consider it one of my biggest mistakes selling it, I made a few grand selling it..... I would NEVER buy a jk with the 3.8,, the 3.6 on the other hand i bit the bullet and decided to try, would i rather have the 4.0 HELLLLL YEAAA best motor imo jeep built.... but i am getting really good mpg and good power, so just need to see if it is reliable or not......
One great change from my tj is the sway bar disconnect, and better stock tires i guess even though changing em out, otherwise its the same..

No i agree 110 grand hell no, , all i was getting at is that the base price did not really change from the tj to the jk...... which is better??? right now i say tj because it proved itself to me and the new jk has not had time too yet only 705 miles so far........ I still love every wrangler though even the 3.8 years, as long as its not a soccor mom driving it and wash and waxing it every week,,,, beat on em thats what they are for...

..Roger That! The one I picked up look like it had been through Afghanistan in the rear cargo area..Previous owner was a woman with a dog or a couple the rear looked like a werewolf had scratched the paint to hell on the wheel wells. But nothing 6 coats of bed liner and a little garage paint flake add in wont heal and cover flawlessly at the expense of me being high as a kite all weekend off the damn fumes from the bedliner

I have nothing against JKs but for me they lost my interest right away when they came out in 07. The 3.8 was a dog and I was reading how they had a tendency to catch fire. I also don't think the JK will take the same aftermarket/2nd hand following as the TJ has once the next gen comes out. I'm not sure how the navigation system, leather seats and back scratcher will hold up after 150K plus miles.

Me too brother, I sold my 2005 tj in 2008 (bought in early 2004) I beat the dog snot out of my tj rubi and never once had a problem,,, I sold it dinged and scratched for more then i owed too and was a no money down deal........

I also 100% agree with all the fancy crap in new jk's wont hold value at all look at how fast tech world moves waste of money imo,,,, I hate power anything,, I had to look forever to find a jk rubi with auto and nothing else...... I want crank windows, push locks, dont try heating my arse with heated seats,,,,,, for gods sake its a JEEP.... give me no doors, no roof, but the ability to go where i want when i want i happy..........

I hated the 3.8 years, test drove one and was sick to my stomach, sry if that offends anybody.... so I waited until the 3.6 and then still gave it a while, which I am glad i did because of the problems in 2012...........

So now I pulled the trigger got a 2013 jk rubi, I did this for more then one reason, I believe future wranglers are going to be light weight ifs junk, sure throw a diesel engine in it to make some happy when they take away solid axles and heavier parts.... I think 2015-2016 is going to be the death of wranglers as we know em.... we may fight now about what is better, but as a long time jeep owner 6 over the years, I see the end coming and ALL pre 2015-2016 wranglers are going to be sought after as soon as the crap they put out is no longer suited for off road..

sad thing is I cant blame them for their choice, I paid less for my out of the box rock crawler then a soccer mom pays for her 4 door loaded mall crawler, and they sell a hell of a lot more mall crawlers..... So the path is set, they are going to do what makes the most $$$$ simple as that.... depressed now need a beer... lol

Written by someone who hasn't played with one. I've had my 97 since Oct 2013.....I'm hooked. I actually have a couple guns I'd sell before I'd sell my Jeep.....and that's saying something....

About 2 weeks after they put IFS in a Wrangler there will be a kit to install D44's and D60's back in on the market.

I love my 3.8L. I honestly believe the 3.8 hate comes from the 4-speed slushbox, not from the engine itself. The 3.8 with the 6-speed will glue you to your seat..

I don't care if it squeaks and rattles. It's a Jeep, not a BMW. The only thing that'd surpass a Jeep in Jeepness would be a tractor and I'd bet it'd squeak and rattle more.

I mean hell, most of these Jeeps had all of those squeaks, groans, moans etc when they were new. Being used has nothing to do with it. I always just saw it as character. My Honda CRX was 30 years old and made all kinds of weird noises and again, I saw it as the car having a bit of character.

Articles like that piss me off. They're obviously written by people who either have no idea what they're talking about or have never experienced what they're writing about in a positive light.

If JKs were so terrible on the used market, they wouldn't have the 3rd highest resell value on the market, behind the FJ and the Tacoma..

My list of worst pre-owned would look something like this.

1) Acura Integra. Because every single one of them on the planet's been stolen at least once and riced out to God knows what degree.

2) Acura RSX. JDM y0!

3) Any RWD compact. I CAN DRIF--no I can't.

Given that JKs are expensive and always have been expensive, they're often babied, often have low miles and you can generally find really nice ones without looking too hard.

MSN's full of shit. Always has been, always will be.

http://www.kbb.com/new-cars/best-res...-10-cars-2013/

JKs are still holding their value very well. Even better than TJs. A low-miles 2006 TJ Rubi can stilll get about 17,000-18,000 at the very top. A 2007/2008 Rubicon can still fly off dealer lots for $25,000+. A friend of mine just paid $28,000 for a 2008 Rubicon with 40,000 miles this summer..

Saying JKs don't hold their value is just not true at all.

I have an 07' JKU with the 3.8 and I love it. I never understood what all the fuss was about. The 3.6 does have more pep, I test drove one, but it didn't make me want to get rid of mine enough to trade it in.

I did have a 92 YJ with the 4.0... Not that was a nice engine

I've had YJ's TJ's and now 2012 JK, no comparison...all were trail worthy but 99 out of 100 days im on road the 1% Im off road the JK is a beast. And the 99% im on road it drives like a dream. I plan on doing alot of trips with my kids this spring summer because they love it so much too. I've only have 12k miles on it in 2 years cause i've been keeping the milage down but what the hell i really want to enjoy it this summer.
