JK Owners and the "Wave"

Just something ive noticed around my state, is that most wrangler drivers will return the jeep "wave" espically other TJ owners but i have never had a JK return a wave to me, and ive waved to alot, it seems people (not all u guys obviously) have brought the JK with the same reason people buy Hummers, not to take off road or be a Jeeper, but just for bling factor, just something ive noticed...

No me! I wave!

Maybe 'cause this isn't my first Wrangler!

the more mods the more likely to get a wave, Just like the older the jeep the more likely you will get a wave.

I'm a waver, but I have also noticed that a lot JK'ers are not. In my town it seems like a lot of younger guys are driving way over the top "bling" jeeps like you said and they have never seen the dirt.

I've had a few JKs wave, but many do not...perhaps they don't realize they are part of the group and we need to wave both hands as hard as we can in order to help them fit in.

this is an old discussion

but yes most of the JK owners are mall crawlers and dont even know about the wave

this is not the nicest way of looking at things but...

after waving about 50~60 times at JK's and getting nothing back, i decided i just wont wave to them at all unless they initiate the wave

and they never have so basically said, JK's in my area never get waved at by me

now TJ's and anything older mostly all wave, and i dont wait for them, i start the wave

I have a TJ and almost never get a wave from anyone, and some very strange stares when I wave at them! I think it's a regional thing, people in California just don't wave (either they don't know or they are just not very friendly?) Took a drive along the coast just the other day and got my first "other jeep initiated wave," and the license plate was out of state! LMAO (and yes, I waved back)

I always initiate the and its usually 50/50 if I get one back. I noticed I rarely get waves from 4 door drivers but I wave at em anyway.

Instead of waving I choose to flip people off. I get a reaction almost 99% of the time.

I probably get on average around 5 waves a day from JK drivers about 50% of them. Maybe its just your area. Or mine.

I noticed that the newer Jeep drivers are less likely to wave around here, Eastern PA, than are the drivers of older rigs. I attributed this to the increasing car-like features that Chrysler includes on the newer models in a successful attempt to have a broader appeal. In older jeeps, it's rougher, noisier and less pleasant, so you know when you see someone else driving one, they must really love it too, so there's more incentive to wave. I'm not trying to put down the newer rigs, they are nice, capable and very much still the baddest-assed factory off-road rigs around, but by having a larger target market, you get more variation in the folks who are willing to own one.

Still I always wave. I also fiind myself waving at jeeps when I am driving the car or someone else's vehicle. That gets me inquisitive looks as the people try to understand why I am waving. If anyone on here ever gets waved at by a guy in a car, it's probably someone like me, who is now fully programmed to wave at all jeeps.

i'm not bashing jk owners but i'm guessing most of them didn't get theirs for the same reasons we have ours. i have noticed this too, although i had one guy in a 4 door jk come rolling up at the stop light on his 24's honking and waving at me. poor fella heres my wave to him haha

I don't get many return waves to my old 87 yj unless it is modified or an older jeep.
I sure get a lot of crap from my wife and daughter when I wave, so I just give a bigger wave when they are in the jeep.

My kids have started waving and they get really ticked when it doesn't get returned. I think they just need to be taught that its a respect thing. Along with the wave you should never pass a jeep thats having problems off the side of the road. Always help out your jeeping family!

Never had a problem with getting waves until they stopped the tj and came out with the jk, and im sorry but are 4 doors even worth the wave or is it not worth the time and energy to raise your hand to them when you know there about a 5% chance for return

I always wave. It just happens and I can't really tell if it is a 2 door or 4 door JK until he or she is upon me. I am also not a fan of the body style changes in the JK, but it is still a jeep.

I have three modes of transportation, a YJ, a JK and a Harley. I wave at motorcylecles in the jeep half the time. I think there are a lot of people that drive the JK's that have never owned a Jeep before so they haven't learned the wave as a natural reflex. I get more waves in the YJ from other jeeps than the JK so I think some people in older jeeps are guilty of not waving to the JK's as well so just keep waving they'll catch on.

You know, there are a few JK folks who do get it. I never miss a chance to admire an older jeep. Bought a new one because I am not mechanical but I am looking forward to driving it forever because we realized before we bought one that the thing about the jeeps is that no matter how old or even how worn out looking they get, it's still a jeep and it's still cool. A jeep never goes out of style no matter what year it is. So please don't be too quick to lump us all into the same group.

No mall crawler here.

Dogs, I don't think you're all being lumped together. It's just that with the JK, the target market for jeeps has expanded to include a lot of non-traditional jeepers. They don't have that special bond with their vehicle and like minded others that has been one of the hallmarks of jeeping for years. In the thread about stickers, it's interesting that there are Toyota and Nissan stickers poking fun at the jeep thing, but how many people are in the toyota or nissan forums, helping their brethren and just sharing all the things they have in common with each other.

I doubt any of those JK owners who don't wave are WFers. By default, that means any JKers in here are alright with me, and I imagine with everyone else too. Like I stated above, the wave has become instinctive and it includes any jeep I see coming my way, even when I'm at the wheel of something else. I imagine there are many others who have the same experience.

I remember back when Chrysler bought AMC and started making the Wrangler in 87. I cut meat in a shop that had three butchers. We were die hard Jeepers and all of us drove CJ's. For the first couple of years none of us would wave at a YJ. I wouldn't have dreamed of driving a YJ at that time. Now 23 years latter I sold my CJ and am driving a YJ and I like it better than any Jeep I've owned. So I make sure I wave at all Jeeps. Funny how time changes things.

Always had a Grand Cherokee of some sort and never knew Jeep owners waved at each other. Picking up my JK from the dealership tomorrow and I promise to wave at all you when I can.
